Hornets Bow In Regional

---- — Cowden-Herrick finished their season in the Nokomis Regional, challenging eventual champion St. Anthony, but losing 60-52.

The Hornets hung in there in the 1st half, then smacked St. Anthony back in the 3rd to make it a 2-possession game heading into the 4th. The Hornets almost matched St. A in crunch time, but just couldn’t get over the hump.

Cowden-Herrick used the 3-point line and the free throw line to challenge the Bulldogs. The Hornets out-scored St A from the arc 15 to 6. The out-scored St. A from the line, 13 to 8. C-H shot 42% from the arc and 41% inside the arc, while shooting 76% from the line.

Despite that 14-point edge, the Bulldogs were proficient from the floor in close. They out-scored C-H by 22 points inside the arc, 46 to 24. That gave St. Anthony the win and sent C-H home.

St. A led 16-12 after one, then stayed on track with a 13-8 run in the 2nd for a 9-point lead at the break. The 3rd would determine if the Hornets would go home without a fight or go down swinging. They went down swinging.

The Hornets stung the Bulldogs in the 3rd, 17-14, and made it a 6-point game. St. Anthony stiff-armed the Hornets late, despite the Hornets 15-point period. The Dawgs scored 17 and advanced to the title match.

Colton Burrus and Dylan Barnes led C-H with 19 and 16 points, respectively. Goeckner and Williams led St. A with 20 and 19 points, respectively.

Burrus recorded a trey hat trick and was part of the solid foul shooting for Cowden-Herrick. He went 8-of-10. He dished three assists and had three boards. He had no steals, but three deflections.

Barnes scored seven times from the floor (1-3). Barnes led C-H in floor play, grabbing a team-high six boards, dishing three assists, making three steals, and blocking three shots.

Carson Lorton scored five points, but also had five boards and blocked four shots. Micah Sandiford (6) and Noah Sandiford (4) added an additional 10 points between them. C-H’s assist to turnover ratio was 11:15, with three steals.
