Burrus, Barnes lead Hornets

---- — Cowden-Herrick boys varsity basketball under the direction of Marc Bain finished with a record of 6-21 and were led by Colton Burrus and Dylan Barnes.

Colton Burrus started off the season as the Hornet leading scorer. He drew attention and had a stretch where Barnes took over and stepped up as the leading scorer in games for awhile. The Hornet fortunes rose or fell on those two top scorers.

Burrus scored 444 points for the season, averaging 16.4 points. He led the Hornets in free throw shooting, field goal shooting, and 3-point shooting. Burrus made 91-of-126 free throws, shooting 72%. He made 155 field goals, shooting a team-high 43%. He also made 43 3-pointers at a 30% clip.

Burrus didn’t just score. He also led the team by dishing 46 assists to other scorers. He had a team-high 36 steals, plus 36 more deflections.

Barnes scored just shy of 300 points (298), averaging 11.0 points per game. Barnes had the 2nd most 3s on the team, making 31 and also shooting 30% from the arc. Barnes was the leading rebounder on the team. He grabbed 152 boards with 109 defensive boards. He had 5.6 rebounds per game.

Barnes was second in blocked shots (28) and had 27 steals, with 28 deflections. He was right with Burrus in assists, dishing 44.

Point guard Konner Blackerby was 3rd in scoring (131 points), making 4.9 points per game. He tied Burrus in free throw percentage (72%), making 23-of-32. Blackerby also had 27 steals and dished 32 assists.

Colton Evans scored 125 points (4.6 ppg). Evans shot 43% from the floor, but didn’t shoot as many shots (44/102). He also shot 30% from the arc, but only took 40 treys. Evans was 2nd in rebounding (123), grabbing 4.6 per game. Evans was 3rd in steals with 29, plus 11 deflections.

Colton Sphar led the team in 3-point percentage, making 17-of-43 for 40%. Sphar also was 3rd in steals with 32, plus 16 deflections. He dished 29 assists.

Carson Lorton led the team in blocked shots by a bunch. Lorton had 43 blocks, more than half of the blocks by the team.
