Lady Rams Topple Tuscola

Shelbyville Moulton 8th grade volleyball with a record of just 9-11 and a 3rd place finish in the conference tourney, has worked their way to the Sullivan 8-3A Regional Championship Match. Shelbyville (#3 seed) upset Tuscola East Prairie (#2 seed) on Tuesday in a 2-game set, 25-21, 25-19.

"This game was by far our best game," said Ram 8 coach Taylor Rhodes. "The girls came out ready to play and it showed on the court. Every aspect of the game was fulfilled when things were going good and bad. We are ready to play Thursday for the regional championship."

Shelbyville edged out Tuscola in the first game to get the 4-point win, 25-21. Rather than having a let down, the Rams persevered and won the 2nd game by six points, 25-19. Great performances led to the upset. Shelby had five double digit performers in just a 2-game set.

Serving was key for the Ram win. Shelby delivered 13 aces in two games. Shayla Darnell led at the line with 13 points and a team-high five aces. Kendyll Dunaway followed with 11 points and two aces. Blair Rodman served 10 points with three aces, and Mallorie Mason served 10 points with two aces. Bailee Buckles was the other double-digit performer, dishing out 10 assists.

Shelby swung for 19 kills in the two games. Darnell led the attack with five kills, followed by Rodman with four kills. Emmalee Storm, Savannah Marty, and Jordan Bruder had three kills each.

Bruder had a huge game at the net. in addition to her three kills, she rose up for four blocks (7 net points). The Rams recorded eight blocks. Rodman had two blocks (6 net points). Marty and Storm had a block, each and a total of 4 net points, each.

It didn't take much court defense for the Ram win. However, Mason led the defense with five digs. Darnell had four and Dunaway three. Emma White dished the other five Ram assists. They had 15 assists towards the 19 kills.

Shelbyville will have to come up with an even bigger upset on Thursday as they face #1 seed Teutopolis in the regional final at Sullivan at 6 p.m.
