---- — The Shelbyville High School wrestling Rams just completed an historic season, but what about the Shelbyville Moulton Middle School wrestlers? They are sending a trio of tusslers to IESA State this weekend.
In just their second season as an IESA wrestling program, the Moulton Rams are returning to IESA State. Last year, Brittin Baker was the sole state qualifier in Moulton's inaugural season. Baker moved to Wilmington. No matter, this year Moulton repeats at state, times three.
Clayton Peterson is headed to state at 135 pounds, Ryan Skowronski is state qualified at 145 pounds, and Cree McConnell advances to state at 155 pounds.
Skowronski (20-3) was the Mattoon Regional champion and the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional runner-up to Chanse Ridgeway. Ridgeway is ranked #2 in the state and Skowronski lost to him by a narrow 4-2 decision, twice. Skowronski won the Jacksonville Tournament and was 3rd at the LeRoy Tournament
Peterson (20-5) was 3rd at the Mattoon Regional and 3rd at the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional. Peterson defeated previously undefeated Luke Shobe of Clinton (31-0) at sectional, 4-2. Peterson finished 6th at Jacksonville and was 3rd at LeRoy.
McConnell (18-3) was 3rd at the Mattoon Regional and 3rd at sectional. McConnell lost to #6 state-ranked Logan Koss of Monticello (sectional champ).
The Moulton Rams are coached by Tracy Agney and assisted by Ben Graham, Caleb Duckett, and Nate Bly.
Skowronski was an all-state cross country runner last fall, placing 5th in the state. Skowronski, Peterson, and McConnell were part of the undefeated, undisputed Shelbyville Moulton conference champion football team last fall.
After leading the Shelbyville Rams Kid Wrestling Program for a decade, as part of the IKWF (Illinois Kid Wrestling Program), Agney became the coach as the Rams transitioned to be an IESA (Illinois Elementary School Association) program.
Last year, the programj started with 25 wrestlers and finished with 11. This year, the program started with 25 and finished with 18. Eleven of the Moulton wrestlers are 8th graders and will feed into the successful high school program next year.
The Shelbyville Kid Wrestling program (ages 4-8th grade) has been feeding into the high school program for over a decade and has been part of the high school resurgence. These three state wrestlers, and eight more incoming freshmen next fall will help the high school program reload after the 2014-15, senior-heavy team graduates after another historic season.
The IESA State Meet is at Northern Illinois University's Convocation Center in Dekalb.
