Shelbyville Moulton Middle School sent three 8th grade wrestlers to the IESA State Tournament last weekend and came home with another 5th, an Elite Eight, and a Sweet 16 finish.
Ryan Skowronski (145 lbs) earned his second 5th place state finish of the school year. Skowronski followed up his 5th place finish at the IESA State Cross Country Meet last fall with a 5th place finish at the state wrestling meet, winning 4-of-5 matches. He won his last three matches of the season.
Cree McConnell (155 lbs) finished in the Elite Eight at State, winning 2-of-4 matches. Clayton Peterson (135 lbs) finished in the Sweet 16 at State, winning 1-of-3 matches.
All three Ram wrestlers won their state preliminary matches. Skowronski defeated Caleb Flanders of PORTA, someone he may see throughout high school, in a close 2-1 decision. McConnell def. Will Reils of New Lenox Liberty in another close match, 8-7. Peterson defeated Ram Sakka of Barrington Station with a dominant 14-2 major decision.
All three Ram wrestlers took a loss as they advanced to the 1st Round. Skowronski lost to Jake Leske of McHenry Parkland by another narrow decision, 1-0. McConnell lost to Gavin Mast of Quincy, 7-0. Peterson lost to Jacon Scherbach of Dekalb Clinton Rosette, 14-1.
All three went to wrestlebacks and two of them got wins. Skowronski beat Matt Switzer of Mackinaw Dee-Mack, 5-1. McConnell beat Mikey McManus of McHenry Middle School in a tight match, 4-2. Peterson lost to James Scherre of Orion by fall (2:18).
With a win in wrestlebacks, Skowronski and McConnell advanced to the wrestleback quarterfinals. Skowronski defeated Peter Kennedy of Lake Forest Deer Path in a gutsy overtime win, 2-1. McConnell lost another close match to Zach McCauley of Lake Villa Palombi, 2-0.
Skowronski, with two wins in a row, survived to wrestle for 5th place. He took on Shamier Austin of Lake Zurich South and took control, winning, 13-7.
