“They were definitely fired up and ready to go,” said Shelbyville Moulton 8th grade volleyball coach Taylor Rhodes. “They played awesome as a team. They played smart and communication was good. When we got behind, they lifted each other up. There was no stopping them.”
Shelbyville, with a record of just 8-11, knocked off Tuscola in the semi, then upset #1 seed Teutopolis in the Sullivan 8-3A Regional Final, 25-20, 25-18.
“In the 1st game, we always had a 2 or 3 point lead. But in game 2, we got down by five right away at the beginning. We slowly got back in it, tied them and went up a few points. At the end we just took it to them.”
Bailee Buckles was in a zone at the service line, serving a match-high 17 points with two aces. Kendyll Dunaway served 12 points and a team-high three aces.
Shelby delivered eight aces in two games. Besides Dunaways’ three and Rodman’s two, White served up two and Darnell one.
Blair Rodman was the top net threat, swinging for three kills and rising up for two blocks (5 net points). The Rams had balance at the net. Jordan Bruder had a kill and two blocks.
Shayla Darnell had three kills and Savannah Marty had two. With Emma White and Emmalee Storm’s solo kill, the Ram attack recorded 11 kills. Their net defense came up with four blocks.
The Shelby mid-court defense was led by Darnell with nine digs. Mallorie Mason and Rodman followed with four digs, each. Shelby used six assists from Buckles and one from white for seven of their 11 kills.
The regional champion Rams take oin Robinson, Monday at the Shelbyville 8-3A Sectional for a chance to go to state. If the stay fired up and win, the Rams, who seem to peaking at just the right time, will go to state with just an 11-11 record. The game is to be played at Shelbyville High School gym at 6 p.m.
