Area Teams Show At EIU

---- — Repeat girls state champs Central A&M, Sullivan-Okaw Valley (SOV), Neoga and Shelbyville showed their hands early for the track season with previews at the Charleston Indoor Meet At EIU on Saturday.

Among Shelby Area teams that participated, Central A&M had the best performances in six events. SOV was the best of the area in three events, Neoga best in a couple and Shelbyville one.

Mollee Bowman of SOV won the triple jump event with a distance of 32 feet, 7.5 inches, while Taylor Rich of Neoga was 3rd (32-1.5). Mikah Maples of A&M, who was 3rd at State in last year in discus, was 3rd in the shot put (34-7.25 feet). Teammate Morgan Damery placed 7th (33-6). Courtney Croy of Neoga, who was state runner-up in long jump last year, was 3rd in the long jump (16-9.5), followed by Amanda McClain of SOV (15-11).

SOV was 2nd in their signature race, the 4x200. They won the state title in the 4x2 two years ago and were runner-ups last year. At the indoor meet, Emily Neuhauser, Ashlynd Risley, Mollee Bowman, and Amanda McClain placed 2nd (1:52.69) to Newton.

Neoga was 3rd in the 4x2. Taylor Rich, Jaycie Roy, Olivia Ott, and Courtney Croy were a second behind SOV (1:53.94).

Central A&M placed 2nd in the 4x400 at the indoor meet and 4th in the 4x800. Mikaela Cole, Ryan Dooley, Paige Seitz, and Jorgi Sparrgrove ran 4:22.28, less than a second behind Williamsville. In the 4x8, Kylee Burcham, Abby Forline, Sparrgrove, and Cole ran 11:05.87, behind winner Tolono. Neoga was 7th (Brittany Deters, Demmie Long, Ott, Maddie Butler) in 11:20.58.

After winning a IESA Class AA state high jump championship in 2012 and taking 3rd in 2013, Shelbyville’s Sydney Miller placed 5th as a freshman at the indoor meet. She cleared 4-10. Kacie Hotze of Neoga was 7th at 4-10.

State cross-country champ Anna Sophia Keller of St. Anthony, was 2nd in the 800 (2:21.34) and 1st the mile (5:08.48) at the indoor meet. Behind her, Shelbyville’s Morgan Powers was 15th (2:32.17) and ahead of A&M’s Paige Seitz (2:39.72).

Salena Sloan followed Keller in the mile, placing 20th (6:14.68), just ahead of Shelbyville’s Blair Johnston in 24th (6:17.93) and Maggy Yockey in 25th (6:19.44).

The area best in the 55 meter hurdle prelims was Ryan Dooley of A&M in 13th (9.77). Teammate Sparrgrove was the area best in the 55 meter dash prelims, taking 8th (7.77). Neuhauser was 11th (7.80). Sparrgrove made the finals and placed 6th (7.78).

Neuhauser was 2nd in the 200 meter dash prelim (27.72), then was 5th in the final (27.79). Croy was 6th in the prelim (28.10), then 7th in the final (28.52). Dooley was prelim 9th (28.63).

Mallorie Harshman of Neoga was the area best in the 400 dash (1:06.59), placing 7th, a few spots ahead of Shelbyville freshman Maddie Holland in 12th (1:08.27).

Elly Oldham of Shelbyville and Mikaela Cole of A&M both went 7-6 in the pole vault to place 13th.
