Nets lose 2 close matches

---- — Shelbyville tennis fell short of two more wins last week, losing to Vandalia, 5-4, then Hillsboro, 5-4.

Shelbyville doubles teams won 2 of the 3 matches in both defeats, but lost in 4 of the 6 singles matches in both defeats.

One constant in the two matches was Alexis Halbrook, who won both of her singles matches and both of her doubles matches with partner Mykennah Allen. Halbrook and Allen have not lost since the Mattoon Invite, 11 straight.

Halbrook, #2 singles, beat Vandalia, 6-4, 6-3 and Hillsboro, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5. Halbrook and Allen were dominant in doubles, winning 10-2 and 10-4.

Julia Bolinger (#5) was the other singles winner against Vandalia, 6-2, 6-0, while Kayla Lee (#1 singles) knocked off Hillsboro’s #1 player, coming back from a game 1 loss, 3-6, 6-1, 10-5.

Rachel Sphar and Kaitlynn Hopper got the other doubles win (#3) against Vandalia, 10-8. Against Hillsboro, Lee and Taylor Powers got the other doubles win, 10-4.

Shelbyville was to host Mattoon on Monday for Senior Day.
