Devon Still hurled a no-hitter against Arthur on Wednesday, winning 4-1, to help Okaw Valley (5-2) bounce back from a loss to Cerro Gordo on Tuesday, 11-5.
Still has been leading the Okaw pitchers in strikeouts, but on Wednesday he also threw the first no-hitter of their season. Still went all seven innings, giving up no hits, but two hits, and one run, while striking out 12.
Still KO’d the first two batters he faced and got the third to ground out to the mound. Okaw then drew 1st blood in the 2nd.
With one out, TJ Miller singled, Still singled, and Connor Cloyd walked to load the bases. Dylan Park reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Miller, 1-0. Colton Sroka launched a sacrifice fly and Still tagged and scored, 2-0.
Still went back to the mound and protected his lead. The first batter grounded out to Ian Tiarks, the second grounded out to the mound, and Still rang up the third batter, to retire the first six batters he faced.
In the top of the 3rd, Okaw gave Still a bigger cushion. Peyton Hagerman led off reaching on an error, then stole 2nd. With two outs, Hagerman went to 3rd and then scored, 3-0.
Still rang up all three batters in the 3rd on four pitches, each. Okaw went in order, as well.
In the bottom of the 4th, Still allowed his first base runner on a lead-off walk. A sacrifice moved the runner. Still KO’d the next batter, but the base runner went to 3rd on a wild pitch. Arthur got their only run on another wild pitch, before the third out on a ground ball, 3-1.
Okaw went in order again in the 5th. Still gave up a 2-out walk in the 5th, then rang up the next batter to end the inning. Okaw Valley got an insurance run in the 6th.
