Death By Jump Shot

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelbyville's quick trigger at the 3-point arc was an addiction that debilitated its production in the 1st half and couldn't be kicked even in the 2nd half.

Second half fouls gave aid and comfort to the enemy. Okaw Valley used free shots as a foundation to pull away in a Timberwolf victory on Friday, 68-60.

Okaw Valley only shot 41.5% from the field, but they made 20-of-32 free throws, a 15-point edge at the line.

The Rams put up 27 3-point shots and made just five (18%). By contrast, they shot 34 2-point shots and made 20.  They were gangbusters inside (58%), but chose to take 44% of their shots from the arc and missed 22 of them in an 8-point loss.

Okaw Valley shot just 42.5% inside (20-of-47). Okaw's salvation was foul shooting. They were in the bonus the last 10:00 of the game and cashed in. Okaw was 19-of-30 in the 2nd half. Okaw was 12-of-18 in the 4th quarter. Shelbyville was 2-of-2 in the 2nd half.

Shelbyville never made it into the bonus. Setttling for 3-pointers does not draw fouls or get you to the line.

Shelby's Spencer Shadwell took the opening tip and drilled a 3-pointer for a quick lead. Okaw missed three shots, then TJ Pieszchalski made a bucket to cap their first possession. On Shelby's second possession they shot another 3 and missed.

Shadwell was fouled and made both free throws, 5-2. Okaw had a couple of turnovers and Shelby put up two more threes, missing both. Okaw had more second shot attempts and Devon Still scored (3 for a quarter).

Shelby missed two shots inside and then took another trey and missed it.  Okaw turned the ball over again and Shelby threw up a 3 air ball.Okaw's Joe Jeffers made a baby hook shot for the lead, 6-5.

Shelby lifted another missed 3 and Luke McConnell got the put back two to take the lead back, 7-6. Still had a put back for an 8-7 Okaw lead., then Shadwell cashed in on yet another 3-point shot for a 10-8 Ram lead. Both offenses had three more possessions each in the final minute of the 1st with more missed shots and turnovers with no points.

Shelby opened the 2nd missing another 3, but again McConnell got the put back and scored, 14-8. On their next possession, they shot another 3 and missed again.

Okaw's Peyton Hagerman finally got on the board in the 2nd period spinning and banking in two and went on to score a game-high 26 points in the last three periods. Shelby missed another 3 and Hagerman spun, stopped and popped for two again, 14-12 Rams.

Shelby's Devin Peterson drove and dished to Devin Miner inside for two, 16-12. Shadwell drove and missed and missed the put back, but McConnell cleaned it up with a two, 18-12.

McConnell scored on the nedxt possession down on the block against two defenders, his third score in 4 minutes, 20-12. Joe Jeffers drove and dished to Still and Shelby missed another 3. Hagerman spun and hit a jumper, 20-14.

Still spun and drove inside for two and, on the next possession, spun again and drove, scoring and getting the foul. He converted ther 3-point play and completed a 9-0 run for a 21-20 lead.

Just before the half, Shadwell drove the lane, scored and converted the 3-point play for a Ram lead at the break, 23-21.

Shelby shot 31% in the 1st half, just 2 of 13 (15%) from the arc, but 7-of-16 inside (43.7%). Okaw shot 32% in the 1st half, trailing by two.

Okaw drew a foul immediately in the 2nd half as a drive and dish went to Still. Cwenton Williams scored inside for Shelby, but Jeffers answered and scored 8-of-his-14 points in the 3rd.

Each team missed a trey, then Jeffers stopped and popped in the lane for back-to-back scores and a tie, 25-25.

Shelby missed a 3-pointer and Hagerman spun, stopped, spun the other way and hit a jumper and got the foul. He converted at the line for a 3-point Okaw lead, 28-5.

The Rams beat the press and Tyler Hendryx scored. Shelby fouled again, then Tice Robinson stopped and popped for Shelby, banking in a two and giving the Rams the lead, 29-28.

Shelby fouled again and Still plit a pair at the line for a tie, 29-29. Hendryx nailed a 3-pointer after a 14:00 drought from the arc, 32-29 Rams. Immediately, Hagerman spun and fell away making the jumper.

Tice Robinson 's ability to deliver an entry pass paid off. He hit McConnell for two inside, 34-31. Jeffers answered with a stop and pop. Robinson found McConnell again for two inside, 36-33. After a Okaw turn over, Robinson found McConnell again on a lob over the defense for two  to cap a 9-4 run, 38-33.

Jeffers was fouled and made both shots. Okaw was down three, 38-35, but were in the bonus with 2:03 left in the 3rd. Hagerman drove and was fouled and made both ends of the 1-and-1, 38-37.

On the next three Ram possessions the Rams lifted 3s and missed for 1-and -dones. Greg wal;ker was fouled and made the front end of a 1-and-1 to cap a 5-0 run and bring a tie, 38-38.

Shadell drove and scored with 10 seconds left in the 3rd, but the speedy Colton Sroka got the ball to the Okaw end and stopped and popped for two to tie as the clock expired, 40-40.

It was a new ball game to start the 4th, but Okaw was still in the bonus and was headed for the super bonus.

Shelby turned the ball over, Okaw missed a rare 3-attempt, but the got another second chance and Still drove and was fouled by Cwenton Williams, his third foul at the 7:25 mark. He made both shots for a 42-40 lead.

Williams tried to make a move on the block and picked up a charge on an Okaw flop for his fourth foul.

On the ensuing Okaw possession, Still drove as Williams defended him. Williams picked up his third foul in 30 seconds and fouled out with 7:00 left in the game. The other Ram big man, McConnell was on the bench with his 3rd foul. That was prblematic for the Rams.

Devin Peterson his a Ram 3-pointer to reclaim the lead, 43-42. Hagerman wasted no time. He teed up his own splash from the arc and captured the Okaw lead with 6:25 left, 45-43. Okaw would not trail again.

Shadwell drove and tied the game, 45-45. Still answered again, driving and picking up the 2 and the foul, converting for a 3-point lead, 48-45, and begin a 16-4 Okaw run.

Shelby missed a long jumper and Hagerman drove and was fouled again. He made both shots. Shelby missed yet another trey, but this time Bart Kennell reached out and tipped the rebound to himself, then scored.

Hagerman drove, missed, and Still got the put back. Shelby missed another 3. McConnell came back in the game with 3:38 left, down 52-47. Jeffers immediately scored inside. Shadwell drove inside and scored, but Hagerman hit from the arc.

Hagerman scored on a give and go and a 10-point lead with 2:00 left, 59-49. Shelby missed another three and, with 1:21 left in the game, Shelby started to foul to stop the clock. Hagerman was fouled for the super bonus and made both shots to cap the 16-4 run, 61-49.

hednryx stopped and popped and missed, but Peterson saved the ball in bounds back to hendryx and he was fouled on a jumper. He made both shots.

Hagerman was fouled again and split a pair at the line, 62-51. Post player Luke McConnel pulled up at the key and drained his only 3-point shot of the game to give Shelby hope with 1:00 left, 62-54.

The Rams were within two scores. However, Okaw beat the Ram press and TJ Pieszchalski drove and scored. he was fouled and had to leave the game with a 10-point Okaw lead and sealing the game, 64-54.

Shadwell drove and missed, but Kennell got the put back with 37 seconds left, 64-56. Shelby air-balled a 3, got the rebound and missed another 3. They got the ball back on a rebound foul and the inbound lob to McConnell led toa bucket, 64-58.

Shelby was on cardiac life-support, but needed to hit two 3s in the last 12 seconds to tie and it was Okaw's ball. An intentional foul was too obvious and Brody Sparks made both shots, then okaw got the ball out of bounds.  Jeffers was fouled and he made both shots for a 10-point lead with :09 seconds, 68-58.

Shadwell drove end to end, unhindered, and scored with four second left to no effect as the game ended, 68-60.
