---- — The first 30 minutes of Friday night’s game was like Sherman’s March to the Sea, as Argenta blew up the Shelbyville Rams defense for 41 points.
The Rams would score twice in the running clock 4th quarter against the fumbling, bumbling AO understudies, but would still start the 2013 season 0-3, losing 41-14.
The story in last week’s loss was allowing big plays. Rather than putting a finger in that dike against Argenta, the dam burst. Shelby started the game with a 3 and out. Argenta started with a 3-play TD drive. Cameron Hupp ran for 45 yards on the 1st play. After an incomplete pass, Hupp walked into the end zone untouched, 7-0 after just over two minutes of play.
Shelby got the ball and drove to midfield with one first down, but Fox had to punt again. He put the ball down at the Argenta 1 yard line. A quarterback senak gave the Bombers some operating room and, on the second play, Hupp ran 95 yards for another big play score, 14-0 halfway through the 1st quarter.
Shelby got the ball back again, crossed into Argenta territory, but them coughed up the ball. AO had a more modest 9 play TD drive, but it was called back for a holding call. The penalty and an AO fumble turned the ball over to Shelby on downs at their own 11. After one 1st down, the Rams had to punt.
Fox put the ball 46 yards away at the AO 28 yard line. On the first play, AO’s Ferrill went 72 yards for another big play TD, 21-0 just over 3:00 in the 2nd quarter.
On the next Ram possession the Rams had their most exciting play of the game. Wyatt Fox threw a pass to Devin Peterson for 37 yards to get inside the red zone. Shelby got to the 14 yard line with a pass to Tyler Hendryx, but the drive stalled and AO took over on downs.
Argenta got the ball at their own 15. They completed a 32 yard pass and on the next play a lateral to Ferrill went 52 yards for another big play score, 28-0 just over half way through the 2nd quarter.
After a Ram 3 and out, Fox punted for 37 yards to the AO 31. Hupp picked up a 1st down on two plays and two plays later Wenskunas ran a counter play 55 yards for another long TD score, 35-0 with 2:24 left in the 1st half.
Shelby got the ball and picked up a 1st down on a screen pass to Hendryx, but the Rams, at that point, were happy to get a half-time break.
Argenta got the ball to start the 2nd half. They made it to the Ram 45 yard line without any big plays, then fumbled. Shelby got the ball, but went 3 and out. Fox came on to punt again and drilled it 49 yards to the Bomber 5 yard line.
AO got a 1st down pitch to the 23 yard line and two plays later AO’s QB Eller hit Crawley on a 40 yard pass. Crawley broke tackles and took it the next 40 yards for an 80-yard score, 41-0. The running clock started with 6:16 still left in the 3rd quarter.
Late in the 3rd quarter, Shelby picked up an AO understudy fumble at the Bomber 27. At the start of the 4th period, after a 1st down by penalty, the Rams went four plays for a score on a Lucas Duckett quarterback keeper. However, there was a penalty that negated the score.
No matter, Duckett hit Fox in the corner of the end zone on the next pay for a TD and Dylan Patch kicked the extra point, 41-7 with 8:46 left in the game.
The Bomber back-ups got the ball again and fumbled the ball away again. Chase Jackson finished off a Ram drive with a 7-yard TD run. Patch kicked the extra point and the Rams capped the score with a palindrome, 41-14 with 5:13 left in the game.
