SHELBYVILLE, IL. — After Shelbyville came close to upsetting #2 seed Maroa in their Vandalia Holiday Tourney opener, 60-56, the Rams finished the day by upsetting  #3 seed Vandalia by double-digits, 55-42.

The game started out as an evenly matched contest in the 1st, then became a roller coaster ride in the 2nd and 3rd periods, before the Rams pulled away late to close the deal.

Shelby led 16-12 after the 1st period. Then they went on a 14-3 run to double-up Vandalia at the half, 30-15. After the break, Vandy took their turn at a run, blitzing Shelby with a 13-6 run and cutting the 15-point lead down under 10 heading into the 4th period, 36-28.

It was reminiscient of the recent Shelbyville win over Stew-Stras, where the Comets had a 21-7 run in the 3rd period to close to within two points before the Rams pulled away for the win.

Like in that game, the Rams pulled away from Vandalia with a 19-14 push in the 4th period.

Ram center Brody Bence was once again the le ading scorer for the Rams, as well as the  game-high scorer, with 22 points. The reigning Daily Union Athlete of the Week shot 50% from the field, including making 1-of-2 shots from the arc. Bence also 5-of-6 at the line and had 6 boards.

Shelby guard Spencer Shadwell was in double figures again, putting on a season-high 17-point performance, making all three of his shots from the arc and 4-of-6 from inside the bow, 78% from the field. He also is scrambling for rebounds, matching Bence with six boards.

Nate Standerfer had a near double-digit performance, scoring nine points, with one trey and most scores closer in. Luke McConnell led the Rams in rebounding with a game-high seven boards.

Vandy had two, almost four players in double figures. Harter and Godoyo had 11 points, each. Harter had a trey hat trick, while Godoyo scored inside the arc. Wells and Woolsey scored nine points, each.

Shelbyville had 11 turnovers again, while Vandalia had just eight, despite losing. Shelbyville out-rebounded Vandy, 26 to 17, and out-shot Vandalia. Shelby shot almost 48% from the field, while Vandy shot just under 37%. Shelby also shot 75% from the line to Vandy's 50%.

Shelbyville is now 1-1 in pool play and takes on St. Anthony, Thursday at 3:30 p.m. St. Anthony lost to Vandalia earlier Wednesday, 70-65.
