---- — Shelby Legion missed out on the rained-out Firecracker tournament. However, they brought their own fireworks to Oblong on Friday, blowing up the home team, 12-1, and 10-5.
It was a day of doubles. Shelby smacked six doubles in game 1 and jacked five doubles in game 2 to fuel their double-dip sweep.
In game 1, Andrew Hawkins went 3-for-3 with a double. Jake Keown was 2-for-4 with a double, Neil Yockey was 2-for-3 with a double, Michael Baker was 1-for-3 with a double, and Ben Helton was 1-for-4 with a double.
In game 2, Hayden Cole was 3-for-3 with two doubles, Christian Vonderheide was 2-for-4 with a double, Baker was 3-for-3 with another double, and Keown was 3-for-5 with another double.
After a couple innings in game 1, Shelby erupted against Oblong with a 3-run 3rd and an 8-run 4th.
Trevor Moore led off the 3rd with a single and Baker doubled. With one out, Gunner Theis drove in a run on a ground out. Cole walked, then Hawkins and Yockey had consecutive RBI-singles, 3-0 Shelby.
In the 4th, Helton led off with a double and Moore singled again. With one out, Keown and Theis singled in runs. With two outs, Hawkins doubled in a run. Yockey walked and Luke McConnell hit an RBI-single. Helton reached on an error and drove in a run, making it 10-zip. White singled for the 11-0 Shelby lead.
Shelby added an insurance run in the 5th, when Cole walked and scored after walk to Hawkins and Fielder’s choice by Yockey and a walk to McConnell, 12-0.
Oblong needed three runs to keep the game going in the bottom of the 5th. They got one run on a 1-out error and a double by Blankanketer. It wasn’t enough.
Christian Vonderheide mastered Oblong, ringing up eight batters in five innings, allowing just one run on two hits, and walking no one.
Game 2 was a lot closer. Shelby led 2-1, then Oblong led 3-2. Shelby tied it 3-3, then Oblong led 5-3. Shelby made it a 1-run game in the 5th, trailing 5-4.
Shelby starter Aaron White took charge at the point and shut Oblong down. while Shelby, scored six runs in two innings for the win.
Shelby took an early lead on three consecutive hits: a single by Theis, a double by Cole, and a 2-run single by Hawkins, 2-0. Down 3-2 in the 4th, Vonderheide hit a 2-out double and keown singled him in, 3-3. Down 5-3 in the 5th, Cole led off with a walk and Hawkins and Baker singled, 5-4 Oblong.
In the 6th, McConnell led off with a single and Vonderheide singled, chasing the Oblong starter off the mound. After an RBI fielder’s choice by Keown, Theis singled, Cole doubled him home, Hawkins singled a run in, and Baker doubled, giving Shelby a 8-5 lead.
In the 7th, McConnell singled, Vonderheide hit into a fielder’s choice, and Keown doubled. Theis singled in two runs and Cole and Hawkins singled. Baker was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases, but they were stranded, 10-5 Shelby.
Shelby pounded out 23 hits in game 2, 37 hits on the day.
