Shelby Sweeps Macon County

---- — Shelby County was matched in hitting in game 1 and out-hit in game 2, but Shelby was able to cash in and held on for the sweep over Macon County on Sunday, 10-4 and 8-7.

Christian Vonderheide and Luke Hatfield led Shelby County at the plate. Vonderheide led Shelby in game 1, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs. Hatfield led Shelby in game 2, going 3-for-4, with a home run, scoring two times and driving in four.

In game 1, Shelby took a 1-run lead in the 1st on Vonderheide’s lead-off home run. Macon tied the game 1-1, in the 2nd, then took a 4-1 lead with a 3-run 3rd. Shelby answered to make it a 1-run game in the bottom of the 3rd.

Moore hit a lead-off single and, with two outs, Theis walked and Cole hit a 2-run double, 4-3 Macon County.

Shelby starter Ben Helton, after giving up four runs and five hits in four innings, shut Macon down the rest of the way. That enabled Shelby to make hay.

With one out in the 4th, Miller singled and Moore walked. Vonderheide singled and keown walked, forcing in a run and tying the score, 4-4. Theis singled in two runs and Cole walked. With two outs, Yockey was hit by a pitch and forced in a run, 7-4 Shelby.

In the 5th, Hatfield reached on an error. Vonderheide doubled Hatfield in with one out, 8-4 Shelby. In the 6th, Hawkins and Yockey reached on errors. McConnell walked to load the bases and White hit a 2-run singled to cap the score, 10-4.

Macon scored four runs and had 10 more runners on base. But, five were out on the base paths and five were left on.

In game 2, Macon had twice as many hits as Shelby, but Shelby got the win.

Shelby led 1-0 in the 1st, then Macon led 2-1 in the 2nd. Shelby had a 4-run rally in the 3rd for a 5-2 lead. Macon cut the Shelby lead to 5-4 in the top of the 4th. Shelby responded with a 3-run rally and a 8-4 lead going into the 5th. Macon had a 3-run rally in the top of the 6th to make it a 1-run game 8-7. But, Baker and Theis came in to pitch and seal Macon’s fate.
