SHELBY COUNTY — Central A&M boys basketgball had a rollercoaster ride playing St. Elmo/Brownstown on Saturday. St. Elmo climbed the final hill and finally notched a 2-point win in overtime, 66-64.
Central A&M teed it up from the 3-point line and struck paydirt 10 times. Meanwhile, St. Elmo was prolific inside the arc and at the line. These two opposing forces drove the rollercoaster to furious finish.
A&M had 24 field goals and St. Elmo 25. A&M had 30 points from the arc and 28 points from inside play. St. Elmo had 42 points inside the arc and 12 beyond. That left A&M up 58-54. The difference came at the line.
Shooting 3s doesn't get you to the line. Central A&M shot 11 free throws and made just six. St. Elmo got to the line a little more, 15 times, but made twice as many as the Raiders (12). A 6-point edge at the line tipped the scales, undid the 4-point A&M edge from the floor, and gave ST. E/B the win OT.
Central A&M was just 6-of-11 at the line, while St. Elmo scored 12-of-15.
St. Elmo held a 3-point lead after the 1st, 16-13. The Raiders grabbed momentum in the 2nd on a 19-10 run to take a 6-point lead at the half, 32-26.
A&M tried to pull away in the 3rd and extended their lead to 10 points, 40-30. St. Elmo was able to snag the Raiders before they got too far out front. They reeled them back in with an 18-8 run in crunch time and forced overtime, 48-48. In the extra period, St. Elmo had a 2-point edge at the final buzzer, 66-64.
Despite the loss, Trent Chepan scored 19 points, after scoring 20 points the night before. Chepan scored eight times and was a perfect 3-of-3 at the line.
Ben Bray was the Raider arc angel, striking five times from long distance and finishing with 15 points. Bray hit two buzzer beaters on Friday, one a game-winner, while recording a trey hat trick.
Bray had half of the 10 3-pointers, Jordan Miller had two, Zach Bugg had two and Kolby Ohl the other. Miller finished with 11 points, the third Raider in double figures.
St. Elmo also had three players in double figures. Behrends had 16 and the Maxey's had 16 and 15 with Smithson's nine and Feezel's eight.
