SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelbyville broke open a scoreless game in the 3rd with a 9-run romp and went on to beat Pana in the Shelbyville Regional semi on Tuesday in five innings, 11-1.
In the bottom of the 5th, leading 10-1, Madison Boone led off with a double and went to 3rd on an error. The next batter, Kayla Brachbill, reached on a walk-off error as the throw sailed past 1st base and Boone raced home to end the game.
Torre Koontz and the Ram defense held Pana in check. Pana had beaten St. Anthony on Monday, 4-3, to make it to the semifinal. Koontz allowed one unearned run on just three hits, not one walk, while striking out four.
The Ram defense and Koontz on the mound allowed just two base runners in the first three innings, a single in the 2nd and a hit batter off a ball in the dirt in the 3rd.
In the 2nd the single got Cheyenne Ashcraft to 2nd on an error in the outfield. Koontz rang up the next two batters. A ground ball to Madison Boone at short gave her a heads up tag on the runner going to 3rd for the 3rd out.
Koontz rang up the first batter in the 3rd, then Haley Riggs was hit on a ricochet pitch off the ground to get on. Koontz retired the next two batters on pop up next the the circle and a ground ball back to the mound.
Ram Coach Josh Maxwell announced to the team that it was the second time through the line up and time to start hitting the Pana pitcher. They did, sending 13 batters to the plate.
Except for a solo single by Koontz, the Rams had been skying the ball the first two innings, making all six outs on pop-ups or fly balls.
