Shelby Gets Firecracker Win

SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

Shelby Legion was 0-for-3 in the Firecracker Tourney and in danger of going 0-for. Enter Christian Vonderheide on the mound. He survived a 4-run inning and finished with four scoreless innings to give Shelby (6-13) a much-needed win over Macon County Legion, 8-4.

Shelby avoided giving up early runs and had a 3-run rally in the 2nd to claim the 3-run lead. That chased the Macon starter from the game. Decatur answered with a 4-run rally in the 3rd to take a 1-run lead.

Shelby knotted the game in the bottom of the 3rd with a solo run, 4-4. Vonderheide dug in and Decatur never scored again.

In the bottom of the 4th, Shelby broke out, scoring another three runs for a 7-4 advantage. Decatur committed five errors and that helped. Shelby added a run in the 6th to cap the score.

Vonderheide threw the win, allowing only one earned run on six hits, but no walks, while striking out seven. He also led the team in hitting. Vonderheide went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, a run and an RBI.

Tyler Romack was back in form, going 2-for-4 with a run. Zach Monroe hit again, going 1-for-4, but scoring twice and driving in a run.

Mark Jones hit safely (1-for-3), scored and drove in a run. Blake Probst got to hit and went 1-for-2 with an RBI-single. Tyler Hendryx was 0-for-2, but drew the only walk of the game and scored.

Shelby (6-13) will host Effingham Babe Ruth on Tuesday, July 1 at Windsor at 5:30 p.m.
