SHELBYVILLE — The Regional Champion Shelbyville Moulton baseball team was hoping to go to state, but a date with Teutopolis stood in the way on Saturday at the Shelbyville Sectional. T'town scored early and held on for the 4-0 victory.
Shelby went down in order in the 1st, but T'town got traction.
After starter Tylr Gottfriedt got the first batter to pop out, the next batter lined a single and stole 2nd. A walk was followed by a ground out, that Gottfriedt covered at 1st.
With runners at 2nd and 3rd with two outs, a ball was hit deep in center field. The fielder raced back and was able to get a glove on it near the track, but couldn't make the play. Two runs scored.
The very next batter doubled into the right center gap, 3-0. A wild pitch put the runner at 3rd. A bloop hit against the wind fell just short of a catch by the center fielder racing in and a fourth run scored.
That was the ball game. Neither team scored the rest of the way.
Brett Spears had a single in the Shelby 2nd, but was stranded. Payton Howell came in to pitch for Shelbyville and gave up one hit. The next batter hit it back to the mound. Howell threw to 2nd and Quinn Martz threw to 1st off balance. Malcolm Miller caught the 3rd out in right.
Daythan Summers led off the 3rd with a single. Cade Watson sac bunted him to 2nd. A ground out got him to 3rd, but he was stranded on another ground out.
Howell gave up a hit on a high chopper in the 3rd, but retired the next three batters. Shelby went in order in the 4th. Howell rang up two Shoes in the 4th and put them down in order.
Shelby went in order in the 5th. So did the Shoes with two more Howell strikeouts.
Watson took four balls in the 6th, then Miller singled. A flyout to right brought the first out. A hard shot to the 3rd baseman allowed him to tage 3rd and throw to 1st for the double play and pull the rug out on the possible Ram rally.
Howell retired the sides again in the 6th with another K. In the Ram 7th, Howell led off with a single. The next three batters went down and Teutopolis advanced to state.
