SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
After the Shelbyville JV basketball team got off to a good start with a season-opening win over Okaw Valley, the Ram varsity got edged out by Okaw Valley scoring spurts, 48-42.
While Shelby scoring was steady with the Lady Rams scoring in double-figures in each period, Okaw’s 2nd and 4th quarter boosts put them over the top.
Shelbyville held a 10-7 lead after the 1st period. Shelby’s Olivia Williamson (Windsor) dialed up a 3-pointer, Madison Boone had a deuce and Lindsay Burton (Stew-Stras) scored from the floor and then made two free throws. Lindsay Floyd (Windsor) split a pair at the line.
Okaw got two early buckets from guard Paige Harlin and a basket from Amy Orris. Guard Mollee Decesaro split a pair of free throws and Okaw trailed by three.
Shelby put up another 10 points in the 2nd period, but Okaw took the lead on a 17-10 run. Floyd and guard Courtney Schultz (Stew-Stras) hit solo shots from the arc and Burton scored from the floor. Williamson came through at the line making 2-of-2.
However, the Timberwolves got a deuce and a trey from Megan Dash and Orris, matching the Ram scoring in the 2nd. Okaw’s leading scorer for the game, Amanda McClain, got on the scoreboard with a deuce and the a conventional 3-point play, as she scored and sank the resulting free throw. Decesaro scored again for the 4-point Okaw lead, at the break, 24-20.
Shelby scored another 10-points in the 3rd period and trimmed the Okaw lead. They got most of it from Burton. Burton scored on a traditional 3-point play, scored again, then had another 3-point play for 8 of the 10 Ram points in the period. Madison Boone added the other bucket.
Okaw got two more scores from McClain and solo buckets from Shelby dash and Decesaro. They held a slim 32-20 lead heading into crunch time.
The tempo ticked up in the 4th period.
, the Rams kicked it up a notch, but so did the T’Wolves. Okaw went on a 16-12 run to stay ahead at the wire.
Burton scored twice from the field, then went to the line three more times, making 3-of-5 shots to finish with a 7-point 4th. The rest of the Ram points late came off free throws. Boone made 3-of-4 foul shots and Lindsey Floyd made 2-of-4.
Meanwhile, Okaw got three more scores from McClain and a host of free throws from Abigail Weybright. Weybright got on the board late with a bucket, then made 4-of-7 free throws. Shelby Dash and Keri Herold added solo twos for a 6-point Okaw margin at the buzzer.
Shelbyville (0-1) was to host Brownstown on Thursday, then travel to Arthur on Monday. Okaw Valley (1-0) was to travel to Sullivan on Thursday, then travel to Meridian on Monday.
