---- — Moulton 8th grade basketball played their 4th game in less than 5 days and started slow at Warrensburg, Saturday morning. They had a late night Friday winning the Nokomis Tourney Championship, then an early call the next morning. No matter. The Rams pulled out a 7-point win in the roller coaster contest to start conference play, 40-33.

Warrensburg double-up the Rams in the 1st period, 14-7. Nokomis tourney MVP Payton Howell hit a trey and guard Mason Cameron had a buckett and two free throws. But, Warrensburg scored six times, including their own trey.

Shelbyville had an answer in the 2nd period, an 11-0 run. Turner Pullen got going, with a two and 1-of-2 free throws. Tylr Gottfriedt scored, Brett Spears scored and Cade Watson got to the line three times, making 4-of-6 shots and giving Shelby a 4-point lead at the half, 18-14.

Warrensburg reasserted themselves in the 3rd and reclaimed the lead with a 13-7 run. Gottfriedt scored from the floor and the other five Ram points had to come from the line. Watson was 1-of-2, Cameron was 1-of-2, and Pullen got to the line three times, making 4-of-6.

Shelby shot just 1-of-8 from the floor in the 3rd. Warrensburg hit four field goals and was 4-of-4 at the line to take a 27-25 lead heading into the fateful 4th.

The Rams ratcheted up their defense and blew by the Cardinals with a 15-6 run. Shelby allowed just on Cardinal basket in the final 6:00. The Rams got a trey from Howell, a solo two from Pullen and Gottfriedt converted a 3-point play.

Shelby scored their other seven points at the line on 7-of-12 shooting. Cameron was 3-of-4 late, Howell was 1-of-2, Pullen was 2-of-4 and Gottfriedt made another 1-of-2.

Shelby free throws won them the game. They were out-scored 24 to 20 from the floor, but out-scored Warrensburg by 11 points at the free throw line. Shelby was 20-of-35 and Warrensburg was 9-of-13. The Rams also snared 19 rebounds.

Pullen was the leading scorer in the game with 11 points and six rebounds, followed by Warrensburg’s Kendrick with 10 points. Shelby had three more scorers with seven or eight points and Warrensburg just two, the difference in the ball game. Cameron and Gottfriedt scored eight, each, and Howell seven.

Shelby Moulton (4-0) gets a little break, then plays Thursday at Arcola after the 6:15 p.m. 7th grade.
