Howse, Duckett Latest Locals at EIU

---- — Series: Shelby Collegiate Athletes Last year, a pair of Shelby Area athletes earned spots on the Eastern Illinois University women’s track team and are key Panther performers. Janie Howse was an IHSA state champ for Central A&M, while Katelyn Duckett of Shelbyville was an all-state distance runner.In high school, Howse was a 4-time IHSA Class A state qualifier in the discus and 3-time qualifier in the shot put. She was a state champion in the discus with distance of 140-7. She was 2nd second in the state meet as a junior in the discus. She was 4th as a sophomore and 12th as a freshman. Howse placed fifth in the state in the shot put as a junior and senior. She holds the school record in both events. As a freshman at EIU, Howse threw the weight and the shot put. In the outdoor season she threw the discus, the hammer, and the shot. Her season-best indoor weight throw was 48-06 at the OVC Championships, placing 12th. Her season-best indoor shot put was 40-9.75 at Grand Valley. She threw over 40 feet three times, including the OVC Championships and the EIU Early Bird Meet. During the outdoor season, Howse’ best discus throw was 143-04 at the Miami Invite, placing 5th. Howse was 2nd Team OVC, by placing 2nd at the OVC Championships (136-07) .Her best hammer throw was at the season-ending OVC Championships (140-10), placing 10th. Her best outdoor shot put was 42-5.5 at the SIU Spring Classic, placing 9th.

In high school, Katelyn Duckett competed for Shelbyville High School. Duckett qualified for the IHSA State Cross Country Meet all four years. She placed 13th as a freshman (18:33), placed 10th as a sophomore (18:19), as a junior, she qualified but was sick. As a senior in cross country, she placed 19th in the IHSA Class 1A State Championship with a time of 18:18.

She advanced to the 2012 IHSA Class 1A Track State Championships in the 3200 run, placed 9th in the state (11:45.45) after placing third in the Shelbyville Sectional (11:54.69). Duckett placed 27th in the 3200 at the state meet as a junior.

As a freshman at EIU, Duckett competed in four meets during the 2012 cross country season. Her best time was 19:30 at the EIU Walt Crawford Meet. Her top finish was 26th at EIU Walt Crawford.

During the indoor track season, Duckett ran the 3000 meters. Her season-best time was 10:51.92 at the EIU Friday Night Meet.

During the outdoor season, Duckett ran the 1500 meters and the 5000 meters. Her best time in the 5000 meters was at the ISU Spring Invite (18:17.5), good enough for 4th place. Her best 1500 time was 5:03 at the SIU Classic.
