"We've started our 2014 Swim Team Summer Conference and are happy to say our team has doubled since last year," said Shelbyville Laker coach Nicole Hendry. "We are boasting 52 swimmers this summer."
Last Saturday, the Lakers took on Tuscola and Sullivan and garnered 14 first place finishes and 21 second place finishes. Shelby defeated Tuscola handily, 542 to 304, but lost to Sullivan in a closer match, 490 to 405.
"We swam @ Charleston our first meet was on June 14. We swam at home again Tuscola on June 21," Hendry said. "We invited Sullivan to this meet since their not in our conference, but we think it's fun to bring another local team over to swim. It helps with competition and we've got several swimmers that swim year round with them. They also give us meet fees, so it's like a fundraiser as well."
Gabrielle Spain (10&U) won all three of her individual events and was on a 2nd place relay. Breanna Vice (11-12) won an individual race and placed 2nd in two events, while being on two winning relays. Madison Kerr (11-12) was also on those winning relays.
Isaac Chambers (8&U) won two events. McKenna Donald (15-18) won an event and was 2nd once, as did Alex Jokisch (6&U). Millie Clark (8&U) won an event. Elyse Lape (8&U) and Anthony Lape (10&U) each won an event, as did
"Our swimmers are improving fast this summer," Hendry said. "Some of our returning swimmers are showing their strength this summer in practice and at the meets. Rheannah Donald is in her zone this summer and is very motivated. Madison Kerr has found her breaststroke and is giving her older sister Breanna Vice a little competition. Braxton Vice, their cousin, is dusting off his swim goggles from a winter break, but showing he can come back strong. He took first in his events at Charleston."
