Shelby Spanks Babe Ruth

After a rough Firecracker tournament, winning just 1-of-4, Shelby Legion Posts (289-611-725) spanked Mattoon Babe Ruth as it was like taking candy from a baby, winning 15-4.

Shelby did to Babe Ruth what others teamed have done to Shelby this year, score early and often against opposing pitchers. Shelby opened with a 5-run 1st, a 3-run 2nd to take an 8-0 lead. Babe Ruth got on the board in the 3rd, but Shelby added a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and led 10-1.

Babe Ruth finally got some traction in the 5th, scoring three runs and cutting the deficit to 10-4. Shelby got a run back in the bottom of the inning and took an 11-4 lead heading into the 6th. A 4-run burst in the 6th buried Babe Ruth, 15-4.

Shelby pounded out 11 hits with three extra-base hits. Four batters had multiple hits. Zach Monroe went 1-for-1 with a triple, walked twice and scored all three times. Tyler Hendryx hit 2-for-4, doubled, walked, reached on an error, and scored all four times.

Gunner Thies was 2-for-2, doubled, scored twice and drove in three runs. Trevor Moore was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Jacob Kramer hit 2-for-5, scored and drove in two runs.

Shelby took advantage of eight errors by Babe Ruth fielders and eight walks and three hit batters by their pitchers for a total of 30 base runners. They left 12 on base. Babe Ruth had just three walks, but walked nine times. Huge for Shelby was a perfect day fielding. That limited Babe Ruth to 12 base runners and seven were left on base.

Five Shelby pitchers combined for a 3-hitter over seven innings, walking nine and striking out 10. Moore started for Shelby and got the win, going two innings and allowing zero runs on one hit and two walks, while ringing up two.
