Shelby Area high schools have graduated male athletes that have gone on to have collegiate careers. Four Shelby Area athletes were part of Eastern Illinois University teams in Charleston.
Cody Boarman of Shelbyville, Cory Powers of Shelbyville, and Derek Williamson of Neoga were members of the EIU men's track team, while Jaden Widdersheim of Strasburg was a member of the EIU baseball team.
In high school, Cody Boarman became an IHSA Class 1A state qualifier in five events as a senior. He was a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams, while earning individual state qualifier berths in the 100m, 200m and 400m runs. Boarman was the state runner-up in the 400m dash with a time of 48.97, while running the anchor leg on the 4x400 relay team. The relay also placed second at the state championships with a time of 3:20.97.
In 2011, Boarman competed in 2011 indoor and outdoor track. He ran the 200m and 400m during the indoor season. He was a member of OVC championship team. His top 400m indoor time was 48.46 at the NCAA Last Chance. The time ranked 10th on the EIU career list. He ran the 200m and 400m during the outdoor season. Boarman scored points for OVC outdoor championship team in two events. His top 200m time was 22.28 at OVC meet. His top 400m time was 48.53 also at the OVC meet.
In 2012, Boarman competed in 2012 indoor and outdoor track. He ran the 200m and 400m during the indoor season. He earned 2nd team All-OVC in the 400m with a time of 48.90, his season best.
During the outdoor season, he ran the 400m. He earned 2nd team All-OVC with a time of 47.90. His season best was 47.79 at the EIU Big Blue. He ran as a member of the 4x400 relay team that won the OVC Championship. They placed 20th at the NCAA Regional with a time of 3:11.42.
