Shelby Stumbles At Vandy

SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

Shelbyville basketball seemed to have their chemistry figured out prior to Christmas, but they stumbled on the first day of the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, losing to Vandalia, 66-55, then to St. Anthony.
Shelby fell behind by five in the 1st period against Vandalia, 13-8. They found their stride in the 2nd and matched Vandy's 18-point period. Shelby was still down by just five at the break, 31-26.
Vandy asserted themselves again in the 3rd and the Rams struggled, falling to a 21-12 run and trailing by 14, heading down the stretch, 52-38. The Rams pushed in the 4th and out-scored Vandy, but not enough to undo the damage.
Shelby shot 25 3-pointers and made seven (28%). Vandy shot 3-of-9 from the arc (33%). Shelby had a 12-point adavantage from 3-point territory. However, Shelby only got to the line for seven free throws, making four (57%). Vandy got to the line for 27 foul shots, making 19 (70%).
Shelby shot 15-of-33 from 2-point land (45%). Vandalia shot 19-of-39 from in close (49%). Vandy scored 38 points in close and Shelby 30 points. The 3s offset Vandy's 8-point advantage inside the arc, as Shelby out-scored Vandy 51 to 47 from the floor.
Not getting to the line cost Shelby. Vandy had a 15-point advantage at the line in an 11-point win.
Only one of Shelby's top scorers got in double figures, while Vandy had the game-high scorer and three more players in double figures. Devin Peterson led Shelby with 11 points, including 3-of-4 at the line. Luke McConnell scored 10 points and had nine boards to be just shy of a double-double.
Shelby was out-rebounded 36 to 21. Shelby also had 15 turnovers and Vandy 12.
