SHELBYVILLE, IL. — St. Anthony's defense put a rock on the Shelbyville Lady Rams' head as they tried to get back to work on Thursday after the long lay-off, 41-23.
St. Anthony did not allow double-digit scoring from Shelbyville in any period, as the Bulldogs, like English Sheep Dogs, corraled the Rams.
The 1st period was somewhat competitive, if not offensive. St. A scored just five times from the floor and Nuxoll scored three of them. Gardewine also split a pair at the line. Shelby got just three solo scores.
Lindsay Burton converted a 3-point play at the line, but that was it for her. Courtney Schultz connected from long distance once. Grace Schuler scored once inside the arc, as the Rams trailed by just three, 11-8.
The 2nd period was more of the same. St. Anthonyscored five more tiems and one of those was a triple. Shelby scored just three times, again. Burton and Madison Boone had solo twos and Schuler teed up one from downtown.
The Rams were still in the game, trailing by just seven at the half, 22-15.
The 3rd period was more "Creepin'" as the Rams' inability to score allowed the St. A lead to keep creepin' up.
Shelby was less successful in the 3rd. They scored just twice from the floor. Schultz had a deuce and Boone a deuce, after she got to the line twice and made 2-of-4 shots.
St. A scored five more times from the floor. Richards led, scoring four times. Niebrugge had a deuce and the other Niebrugge split a pair at the line for a 12-point lead, 33-21.
If Shelby could break out, they could still have made the 4th period interesting. They couldn't. In fact, they only had one score in the final frame, a two from Burton. St. A scored four more times and won by almost 20 in a defense controlled game.
