Shelby 8th Sweeps Tourney, 7th/8th Sweep 'Skins

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Moulton volleyball put a few more feathers in their cap last weekend, the 8th grade swept through the Okaw Conference tournament and the 8th and 7th grade Rams swept Sullivan on Tuesday.

In the conference tourney, Shelby 8th whooped Warrensburg, 25-5, 25-17, mauled Maroa, 25-8, 25-10, then munched Meridian, 25-11, 25-15 in the championship. Then on Tuesday, Shelby 7th just missed sinking Sullivan in two, 25-17, 23-25, 25-8.

"These kids played a great tournament from start to finish," said Ram coach Lisa Peifer. "We didn't over look anyone and played every ball in an aggressive manner. We did a great job at the service line keeping errors to a minimum and also keep the teams across the net on defense most of the match. This group finished 2nd to Meridian last year, so this was a big win for them to earn the conference trophy back. They did a great job and deserved to win this tourney."

One Ram had a triple-double, almost a quadruple-double. Two Rams had a double-double. Jacque Johnston had a triple-double, Caylee Wheeler and Maddie Holland had double-doubles.

Maddie Holland was a beast at the service line and led the net defense. She racked up 63 service points with almost a third of those being aces (20). She had five blocks and with her five kills had 10 net points. Kary Langan led the rest of the service crew with 29 points and five aces.

Sydney Miller was the net assassin, swinging for 16 of the 42 team kills, almost 4 out of 10 of the team's kills on the day. Her three blocks gave her almost 20 net points.

Setters Jacque Johnston and Caylee Wheeler were on their games, as well. They combined for 30 assists of the 42 kills. Johnston served up 16 points with one ace, dished a team-high 18 assists, got down for a team-high 10 digs and swung for nine kills with three blocks (12 net points).
