Devils Douse Comets

Windsor Upsets Stew-Stras In Regional

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Windsor basketball looked to be coasting to a dismal end of the season the last few weeks. Surprise! They rope-a-doped everybody, including their rival opponents, Stew-Stras. The #6-seeded Devils knocked off the #3-seeded Comets in the first round of the Dieterich 1A Regional on Tuesday, 63-58.

The Devils were possessed, like invasion of the body snatchers. They didn't coast, they took it to the Comets.

Windsor led 12-9 after the 1st. Stew-Stras stormed back with a 19-14 run to take a half-time lead, 28-26. Windsor countered with their own 19-12 run in the 3rd. The Comets knew they were in for a fight, seeing the eye of the tiger in the Devils' eyes. Windsor led by five to start the 4th, 45-40. The 4th was sound and fury signifying and blow-for-blow draw, leaving the Devils up by five when the smoke cleared.

Windsor won the game, driving to the hole, getting fouled, and making their free throws. Windsor shot 40 free throws. The Comets shot six. Windsor made 28 free throws. Stew-Stras made five, giving Windsor a 23-point advantage just at the foul line.

Junior Alex Allen was 11-of-14. Freshman Tristan Warner made 10-for-11. Junior Hayden Cole made 6-of-12.

Both teams made five 3-pointers, while Stew-Stras out-shot Windsor inside the arc 19 to 10 for an18-point edge from the floor. But, it couldn't make up for the lopsided, 23-point disparity at the line.

Both teams had four players in double figures. Windsor was led by Allen with 23 (11 points from the line), followed by Warner with 16 (, two 3s, 10 points from the line), Cole with 11, and Leasher with 10. Stew-Stras was led by Fulk with 16, followed by FRy with 14, Helmuth with 12 ( all 3s), and Becker with 10.
