LAKE SHELBYVILLE — In what could be a regional final preview, Shelbyville softball (#1) was beaten by Sullivan (#3) in Shelbyville on Thursday, 11-9.
Shelbyville is seeded 1st in the upcoming Shelbyville Regional and Sullivan is seeded #3. But on Thursday, Sullivan scored 1st and never trailed.
If the Rams can clear up their errors, they might beat Sullivan in a rematch. Shelbyville out-hit Sullivan 15 to 3, but committed seven errors. Sullivan had just three earned runs out of 11. Shelbyville had eight earned runs out of nine.
Madison Boone had to take a tough loss. She allowed just three earned runs on just three hits and four walks. She struck out just two as Sullivan put the ball in play and put the pressure on the Ram fielders. It paid off.
The first two batters of the game reached on errors and scored. There were three errors in the 1st and no hits or walks.
Shelby answered in the 1st. Boone led off with a hit ,then Kayla Brachbill doubled her home. Jensen Cloe singled Brachbill in to tie the game, 2-2. Both teams went in order in the 2nd.
Sullivan scored three in the 3rd. With one out Bailee Pratt walked,, but was out at 2nd. Elissa Stewart singled, Taylor Gottfriedt reached on another error and Liz Inman reached on an error. Heidi Clements singled, nbut was out at 2nd, 5-2 Sully.
Kayla Brachbill led off reaching on an error and Torre Koontz doubled with one out. Rachel Fox singled and an error in the outfield made it 5-4 Sullivan.
Sullivan had their appetite whetted and they came right back in the 4th for a 5-run burst. A single and an error put the first batters on. With one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Shelby committed another error. Two more consecutive errors dealt a fatal blow to the Rams, falling behind by five runs. A ground out RBI made it 10-4 Sullivan.
