Boone Homer Lifts Rams Over Mattoon

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — It was another pitchers' duel for Shelbyville and Mattoon. Grace Moll threw seven innings and struck out 17 for the Rams. Starwalt went seven innings and struck out nine for the Green Wave. A 1st-inning RBI-double and a 6th-inning solo home run by Madison Boone were the difference in the 2-1 Ram victory.

It was not only a pitchers' duel, but a fielders' duel. Neither team committed a single error. It was a solid ball game. Moll rang up two of the three batters she faced in the 1st, while the Rams took an all-important early lead in the 1st.

In the Rams 1st, lead-off man Jensen Cloe drew a walk. Kayla Brachbill grounded out and sent Cloe to 2nd. Moll struck out. Then Boone hurt Mattoon the first time in the game. She smacked a double and drove Cloe home, 1-0.

Again, Moll KO'd two of the three batters she faced in the 2nd. Rachel Fox threw the other out, 3rd to 1st. Starwalt retired the Rams in order in the 2nd with one K. Mattoon threatened in the 3rd.

Packer led off with a single, but Moll rang up the next two batters. Tate singled and Considine walked to load the bases with two outs. Moll then KO'd Sparks on four pitches to kill the threat. Cloe reached base again in the Ram 3rd with a single, but was left on base.

Phipps led off with a single in the Wave 4th, but Moll responded striking out the next two batters. Packer lined a shot to Williams at 2nd, but she snagged it for the 3rd out. Like wise, Fox singled to start the Ram 4th, but the next three Ram batters went down swinging.

Moll struck out the sides in the Wave 5th. A ground out and a fly out began the Ram 5th, then Brachbill singled on a 3-2 pitch to win that battle. A pop out left her on base.

Mattoon threatened again in the 6th. Moll KO'd the first two batters, but then walked Phipps. Bath then laced a triple, scoring Phipps and tying the score, 1-1. Fox threw out the next batter and it was on to the bottom of the inning.

Boone led off and on a 2-2 pitch, lifted a solo home run to reclaim the lead, 2-1. Starwalt let one get away, even though she struck out two of the next three batters.

It took Mattoon six innings to get their first run off Moll and the Rams. Now they had to do it in one inning, the 7th. Packer drew a walk to put the tying run on and the lead run at the plate. Moll struck out the next batter. Moll struck out the following batter. With the top of the order up, Moll rang her up on four pitches for the win.
