Vonderheide shuts down Danville

Christian Vonderheide won the pitchers duel against Danville in Saturday’s opening game of the doubleheader thanks to a Jr. Legion hitting hero, 3-0. However, Shelby back-up pitchers gave out too many free passes and Shelby dropped the nightcap, 13-3.

Vonderheide allowed six hits over seven innings, but only one walk, while striking out nine in his shutout performance. The two Danville pitchers also struck out nine combined, but walked nine.

Two of those walks and an error set the table for previous Jr. Legion stand-in Tyler Hendryx. Hendryx hit the #9 slot and went 2-for-2 with a single, a walk and a game-winning, 3-run double.

With one out in the 4th inning in a scoreless tie, Mike Baker walked. AJ Miller reached on an error. Ben Helton then walked to load the bases. After another strikeout, Hendryx came to the plate.

With two strikes and one ball, Hendryx laced a double into the gap in left center. It scored all three base runners to break the tie and put Shelby up, 3-0.

Shelby had 11 other base runners, but couldn’t put walks and just three hits together to score. Despite their six hits, Danville only had eight base runners in seven innings and only had two runners get as far as 3rd.

Shelby defenders turned another double play. With one out in the 4th, Vonderheide took a ground ball and threw to Yockey at 2nd, who threw to Miller at 1st. Vonderheide then rang up the next batter to retire Danville in order.

The only Shelby error came with two outs in the 3rd and Miller followed with an unassisted play at 1st to end the inning.
