---- — Christian Vonderheide won the pitchers duel against Danville in Saturday’s opening game of the doubleheader thanks to a Jr. Legion hitting hero, 3-0. However, Shelby back-up pitchers gave out too many free passes and Shelby dropped the nightcap, 13-3.
Vonderheide allowed six hits over seven innings, but only one walk, while striking out nine in his shutout performance. The two Danville pitchers also struck out nine combined, but walked nine.
Two of those walks and an error set the table for previous Jr. Legion stand-in Tyler Hendryx. Hendryx hit the #9 slot and went 2-for-2 with a single, a walk and a game-winning, 3-run double.
With one out in the 4th inning in a scoreless tie, Mike Baker walked. AJ Miller reached on an error. Ben Helton then walked to load the bases. After another strikeout, Hendryx came to the plate.
With two strikes and one ball, Hendryx laced a double into the gap in left center. It scored all three base runners to break the tie and put Shelby up, 3-0.
Shelby had 11 other base runners, but couldn’t put walks and just three hits together to score. Despite their six hits, Danville only had eight base runners in seven innings and only had two runners get as far as 3rd.
Shelby defenders turned another double play. With one out in the 4th, Vonderheide took a ground ball and threw to Yockey at 2nd, who threw to Miller at 1st. Vonderheide then rang up the next batter to retire Danville in order.
The only Shelby error came with two outs in the 3rd and Miller followed with an unassisted play at 1st to end the inning.

Game 2 was a world apart from game 1’s pitcher’s duel. Four Shelby back-ups gave out 11 walks and gave up six Danville hits leading to 13 runs in just four innings.
Danville got on the board in the 2nd with a 5-run inning. Two walks were followed by a sacrifice bunt, then two more walks. A 2-out 3-run homer rang the cash register.
Shelby once again, like game 1, got all three of their runs in one inning, this time the 3rd.
Aaron White led off with a single. With one out, Vonderheide walked and Yockey singled. With the bases loaded, Gunner Theis slapped a 2-run single. Baker hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Yockey.
It was a 2-run contest, 5-3 Danville, until the bottom of the 3rd, when Danville rang up six more runs.
Two walks were followed by a 1-out double. Two more walks lifted the starter, Baker. Luke McConnell came in and threw two walks, followed by a sac fly RBI. He was yanked for AJ Miller. An RBI singled made it 11-3.
The die was cast for Shelby, who despite splitting the double-dip, could only score three runs in each game.
In the bottom of the 4th, Danville started with two singles and a walk. A sac fly RBI and an error made it 13-3 engaging the 10-run rule. Shelby went in order in the 5th and it was game over.
