SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Shelbyville baseball went to 6-0 on Tuesday with a drubbing of Dieterich, 9-3.
Dieterich used small ball early to get a lead and stay in the game through three innings, but it wouldn't be enough. The Rams caught fire in 4th and got separation, then left Dieterich in the dust.
Sophomore Lucas Duckett went the distance allowing three runs, on five hits and four walks, while striking out three. Meanwhile, the Ram hit knocked out nine hits, with seven of the nine Rams hitting safely.
Dieterich used small ball early to get a lead, but it wouldn't be enough. The Maroons took a 1-0 lead in the 1st as their lead-off man drew a walk, was sacrificed over and scored on an error. Duckett then rang up the next two batters and that was that. Dieterich's starter, Traub, only allowed Shelbyville slugger Luke Hatfield to reach on an error.
Poe got a lead-off single in the 2nd and was sacrificed over again. However, Campton hit to the mound and Duckett threw to 3rd baseman Brett Peifer, who threw to 2nd baseman Jake Keown, to get Poe out on the base paths. Jake Keown then made an unassisted play on another fielder's choice to halt the small play scheme.
The Rams wrested the lead away in the bottom of the 2nd. Catcher Garrett Manship singled and Zach Williams reached on an error. Duckett sacrificed the runners closer to scoring and, with two outs, Brown walked. With the bases loaded Keown singled home two runs, 2-1 Rams.
Dieterich used a couple errors to knot the score in the 3rd. Both Bohnhoffs reached on errors. A fly out couldn't get the runs home, but the next fly ball got one run home from 3rd to make it 2-2. The Ram took another lead, when Nate Standerfer led off the bottom of the 3rd with a single. Manship followed with a single and Williams reached on an error, 3-2.
Dieterich got that run back in the top of the 4th to tie again the score again. Poe drew a walk and Hartke singled. Campton sacrificed to move the runners again. Shoenskea and Bohnhoff walked and forced in a run, 3-3. Hatfield squeezed a Bohnhoff line drive and Duckett was out of the jam.
That sigh of relief turned into a Ram charge. Sheldon Meyer led off with a single and Brown sacrificed him over. Keown was hit by a pitch and Peifer walked to load the bases with one out. Hatfield mcame to the plate and made Dieterich pay with a 2-run single. Standerfer launched a ball into center and, though it was caught, Peifer tagged and scored. Hatfield had stolen 2nd and 3rd and scored on a passed ball.
Shelby was up 7-3 with two outs, but still reloaded. Manship walked, Williams singled and Duckett singled to load the bases. A ground out kept them from capitalizing on their second round of scoring in the 4th.
Traub tried to spark the Maroons with a lead-off single in the 5th. But, a fielder's choice a fly out to Hatfield in center and a shortstop unassisted play by Meyer stopped the Maroons.
The Rams weren't done. In the 5th, again with two outs, Shelby worked two runs. Peifer walked. Hatfield was plunked by a pitch. With two on and two outs, Standerfer came through again. He hit an RBI single, 9-3 Rams.
Duckett was into the 6th and still kept Dieterich under control. Peifer threw out the first batter, 3rd to 1st. Peifer then caught a pop up. Duckett won a battle at the plate with a 2-2 pitch for his third strikeout, sending the Maroons down in order for the first time in the game.
Shelby threatened again in the 6th. Williams led off drawing a walk. He went to 2nd on a wild pitch, then to 3rd on a ground out. Traub threw two of his three strikeouts in a row to send the Maroons to the 7th for a hopeful comeback. They got a couple of base runners, but there comeback hope was not realized.
The first two batters grounded out to Keown, 2nd to 1st. With two outs Traub tried again to spark a rally with a single. Westjohn made it two straight hits. The next batter hit the ball right back to the mound and Duckett ended the complete game with a throw to 1st.
Standerfer and Manship led the Rams, both going 2-for-3 with a run. Standerfer drove in two. Hatfield was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Keown, Williams, Duckett and Meyer all hits safely. Traub was the only Maroon with two hits.
Shelbyville (6-0) was to put that perfect record to the test when they travel to Mt. Zion on Wednesday.
