SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Arthur has been a nemesis to Okaw Valley the last several years. Tripping the T’Wolves up. On Tuesday, it was Okaw that played the spoiler role in conference play. Okaw snapped an 8-game Arthur win streak, 70-62.

The game started with Arthur going up by six early on the strength of seven players scoring. Schuring dialed up a deuce and a trey, while Maxwell, Seegmiller, Martina, and West had solo scores. Honn put a down payment on his team high 16 with a pair of free throws. Plank added 1-of-2.

Okaw scored all their early points from the floor. Wes Thompson and Peyton Hagerman launched solo treys, while Garrett Sparks and Wil Craig had solo twos, to trail 16-10.

The score roller-coastered in the 2nd as Okaw got the upper hand. What helped was their ability to get to the line. Okaw got to the line for 12 free throws and made nine. Arthur had five foul shots and made just three. Okaw also had four field goals to Arthur’s three.

Schuring was fouled on a three and made all three foul shots, then a deuce. West scored a trey, but Schrock had the only other Arthur bucket.

Cody Corrington came off the bench for Okaw and ginned up a 9-point period. He scored a two, then a three. He made two free throws, then another deuce. Joe Jeffers drew some fouls and made all four of his foul shots. Thompson scored and made 1-of-2 foul shots. Sparks split a pair of free throws and so did Hagerman.

Okaw answered Arthur’s 16-10 1st period run with an 18-10 2nd period run, giving the T’Wolves a 2-point lead at the break, 28-26.

There was no roller coaster in 3rd period. The two teams locked up in defensive period with little change in the Okaw lead. Arthur did get to the line in the 3d, but made just 2-of-5 shots. They scored five times from the floor with J. Plank knocking down a solo trey. C. Plank scored twice in close and split a pair at the line to lead Arthur in the period with five points. Honn and West added solo twos and Martina split a pair at the stripe for 13 points.

Okaw got six scores from the floor in the 3rd, from six different players. Hagerman and Thompson struck from the arc, while Sparks, Corrington, Jeffers, and Craig added solo twos to increase their lead to three points, 42-39.

Although the game was still close heading into the final frame, the two teams tried to out-sprint each other to the finish. The two teams combined for 51 points in 8:00, an average of 6.5 points a minute. Arthur connected on five 3-pointers and two deuces, but just 4-of-6 foul shots. Okaw nailed eight 2-pointers and 12-of-13 free throws..

Up just three points to start the 4th, Okaw scored 28 in the final flurry. Corrington scored 8 of his game-high 19 with the game on the line. He scored three times from the floor and converted one of those into a 3-point play. He also made 1-of-2 fouls hots late.

Hagerman scored a two then worked his way to the line. He shot six free throws and buried them all. Thompson scored two more times, then sank a pair of free throws. Jeffers added to the late surge with two scores and Hunter Perrine got on the board late with 2-of-2 at the line.

Honn launched a sortie of 3-point missiles in the 4th, making four and giving Arthur a 12-point boost. But, it wasn’t enough to offset all those Okaw Valley free throws. J. Plank hit another trey. A. Schrock had a two, C. Plank had a 3-point play. Maxwell was 2-of-2 at the line. C. Schrock was fouled on a three, but made just one free throw. Their 23-point period fell short of the Timberwolves late performance.

Corrington led all scorers with 19 points and he didn’t score in the 1st. Hagerman and Thompson followed Corrington with 15 points, each. Both had a pair of triples, while Hagerman was 7-of-8 at the line and Thompson was 3-for-4. Jeffers was the fourth T’Wolf in double figures with 10 points, including 4-of-4 at the line.

Honn led Arthur with 16 points, 12 points from the arc in crunch time. Schuring followed as the only other Knight in double figures. He had 10 points, all in the 1st half.
