Hornets Get Revenge On COR, Too

JOHN CURTIS - Daily Union Sports Editor

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Christ Our Rock almost stoned the Cowden-Herrick on their own court on Friday, but the Hornets came swarming back late to shock the Rock, 66-64.

As part of revenge week, the Hornets welcomed Christ Our Rock into the Hive and got even for an early season, 5-point loss to C.O.R., 64-59. Cowden-Herrick had already gotten revenge against Patoka on Tuesday, 64-48.

Christ Our Rock came out strong, but the Hornets stayed with them and trailed by just one point, 17-16. The 2nd period was more defensive and the Hornets were able to knot the score at the break, 30-30. In the 3rd period, COR went on the assault again and had an 18-11 run to put the Hornet quest for revenge in jeopardy.

The Hornets were down, 48-41 with just 8:00 left. However, the Rock made the mistake of kicking the Hornets nest and they came out swarming. The Hornets stung the Silver Stallions with a 25-16 run, pulling out a 2-point win at the final buzzer.

Key to the game was 3-point and free throw shooting. Ethan Schoonover launched a sortie of five 3-pointers for Cowden-Herrick and led them with a game-high 21 points. Schoonover also scored in close twice and was 2-of-2 at the line.

Scoring leader Luke Moore followed with 17 points, scoring seven times from the floor, including a trey, and made 2-of-3 at the line. Colton Burrus, who led C-H on Tuesday with 20 points, kept his roll going by scoring 11 points on Friday. Burrus scored four times, including a triple, and made both of his free throws. Moore and Burrus were also active on the glass, with a team-high eight boards, each.

Schoonover, Moore and Burrus scored 49 of the team’s 66 points, 74% of the offense, including  7 of the 8 C-H treys. Tyson Morgason, with nine points, had the other C-H trey. Schoonover, Moore, and Burrus made 6-of-7 free throws. C.O.R. only made 3-of-4 free throws. C-H had a 5-point advantage at the line, overall, and made one more 3-pointer in a narrow 2-point win.

Burrus shot 50% from the field, 75% from in close and 25% from the arc. Morgason shot 57%, 60% in close and 50% from the arc.

Cowden-Herrick committed just 10 turnovers in the win, while getting seven steals, four deflections, and dishing six assists. The Hornets also snagged 35 rebounds.
