Beecher City Knocks Off St. Elmo

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Beecher City basketball has had a few quailty wins lately, including upsetting Stew-Stras by a point. On Friday, they added to it,  knocking off St. Elmo, 50-43.

Brady Barnes, the Daily Union Athlete of the Week, stepped up again, leading BC with 20 points, including a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line . The top three scorers for BC shot all but one of their free throws and made 14-of-17.

In fact, BC's foul shooting is what won the game. St. Elmo out-scored BC from the floor 40-36, including twice as many 3-pointers. St. Elmo cashed in eight times from the arc to BC's four. However, BC had a 11-point edge at the line. St. Elmo got just four free throws, making three.

St. Elmo out-rebounded BC 26 to 22, but BC's floor game was better. BC had just 10 turnovers to St. Elmo's 17. BC had 10 steals, twice as many as St. Elmo  and 14 deflections, twice as many as St. Elmo. That, plus free throws, tipped the scales in BC's favor.

St. Elmo looked to have the game in hand after the 1st, leadng 12-4. But the Eagles flipped the coin in the 2nd with their own 12-5 run and leading by a point at the half, 17-16.

The 3rd period was like kissing your sister, a tie, naking the 4th period real crunch time. BC exploded down the stretch on a 21-13 run, leaving St. Elmo grasping as time slipped away.
