SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Shelbyville made run in the 3rd quarter in the first game of the Auburn 2A Regional on Monday, but Meridian pulled away in the 4th and ended the careers of five Ram seniors, 62-42.
Meridian shot well in the 1st half and Shelbyville didn't. Meridian's Snarski had 20 of his 24 points in the 1st half. The Rams were down 10 after one, 20-10, and down 13 at the break, 32-19.
The Rams needed to cut the lead by 10 by the 4th and they did that ahead of schedule. The Rams got a couple of Nate Standerfer 3-pointers, Brody Bence scored, Spencer Shadwell scored and Jake Keown got offensive.
Shelby cyt the lead down to seven in a hurry, then Meridian pushed it back to 11. By the end the the 3rd, the Rams had cut the 13-point half-time lead in half. They had a 16-9 run and trailed 41-35 heading into the 4th.
Shelby scored early in the 4th and cut the Meridian lead to just four, 41-37. Shelby then had turnovers on two straight possessions and Meridian pushed the lead back to eight. Then Meridian's Smith asserted himself. He scored 15 of his 20 points in the 2nd half.
The Rams were back down by 11, 48-37. Darin Breeden made a couple of free throws, but Meridian continued their run. After Shelby cut it to four points, Meridian went on a 19-2 run until the 1:27 mark, 60-39. The Rams gave the seniors their bows, then both teams flooded the floor with subs.
Shelbyville ended the season 16-12.
