Ram Baseball Wrap 2013

The Sweet 16 Shelbyville High baseball team (24-4) announced team awards as they put the final wraps on their amazing 2013 season.

Shelbyville won the undisputed Okaw Valley Conference Championship and were the Tuscola Regional Champions. They finished the season in the sectional title game. Shelby had four 1st Team OVC players, two unanimous, and a fifth Honorable Mention.

Shelbyville Slugger Luke Hatfield tied the SHS season record for the most home runs, tying Will Clark with 12. Hatfield, a unanimous 1st Team OVC pick, set a SHS record with 38 career home runs. He was also the RBI leader all four years. Hatfield had 41 RBI's this year and a slugging percentage of 1.013. He led the Ram hitters in 10 categories, including 11 stolen bases without getting caught.

At the awards presentation, Hatfield added the Team MVP Award, the On Base % Award (.571), and the Batting Average Award (.438).

Andrew Hawkins (11-2), who pitched almost twice as many innings as others on the staff (67), emerged as the Ram #1 ace. He started 10 games and had six complete games with an ERA of just 1.36 with 56 strikeouts. Hawkins pitched nearly every big contest the Rams had to win. Hawkins, the 1st Team OVC pick, earned the team Pitching Award.

Shortstop Neil Yockey's leadership earned him the Captain Award. Yockey, a 1st Team OVC pick, hit .266 and had a quality at bat % of .570. His fielding percentage was .934 with 30 put outs and just six errors at shortstop in 28 games.

Eli Miller, a unanimous 1st Team OVC pick, earned the Defense Award at center field. He had 35 put outs with just two errors in 28 games. He had the most plate appearances on the team (115), the most quality at bats (76), the most runs scored (40), the most stolen bases (19), getting caught just once, and tied for the most doubles (8). Miller was 2nd on the team in average (.429). He was 2nd in QAB % (.661), had 19 walks, and had a slugging percentage of .637. Miller was the co-recipient of the Most Dedicated Award.
