Shelby Avalanched By Maroa

Shelbyville was winning a tight ball game at home against Maroa on Tuesday, until an avalanche of Trojan runs buried them in the 6th inning. Maroa won the early dismissal, 12-2.

"A big inning hurts us again," said Ram coach Josh Maxwell.

Torre Koontz handled Maroa for the better part of five innings. Only three Maroa batters reached base in four innings and she struck out four.

Meanwhile, Shelby manufactured a 2-run lead. Courtney Williams walked in the 1st and Kayla Brachbill reached on an error. With two outs, Koontz reached on an error, followed by an RBI-single by Rachel Fox, 1-0 Rams.

In the 4th Jensen Cloe smacked a 1-out double. With two outs, Lindsey Eigsti was hit by a pitch, then Maddie Holland crushed a ball over the center fielder's head for an RBI-double, 2-0 Rams.

In the top of the 5th, Maroa started to get a bead on Koontz. A single, a stolen base and another single made it 2-1 Rams.

Shelby went in order in the 5th, then the bottom fell out.

Finck led off with a double, taking 2nd on an unaware Ram outfielder, then Tipak tripled. Koontz was lifted. Madison Boone came on in relief, but there was none.

The floodgates were open. A single, a walk, a double, two more walks and a single started spinning the revolving door at home. An error, a double and another error had brought 11 batters to the plate with no outs and completed the landslide.

Down 12-2 and facing sudden death, Shelby needed to score. Cloe walked with one out, but the next two batters went down and it was game over.

Cloe's and Holland's doubles and Fox's RBI-single were the only Ram highlights at the plate.
