Athlete of the Week

The Daily Union Athletes of the Week distinquished themselves on the diamond.

Senior lead-off man Spencer Shadwell went 5-for-5 hitting his way on base in every at bat. Shadwell hit three singles, then a triple. He then hit a walk-off RBI single.

He drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 7th in a comeback against Tolono on Tuesday to stay in the OVC title hunt. Shadwell scored twice and drove in two runs.

Brett Peifer, Shadwell’s teammate, also came up huge in that game. Peifer hit 3-for-4, stole two bases and scored twice. In the 3rd, Peifer put the tag on an opponent trying to score on a fly out.

In the 4th, Peifer launched a 2-run home run to keep Shelby in the game. Peifer also gunned down a man trying to steal 2nd. Peifer singled in the bottom of the 7th rally and scored the tying run.

Peyton Hagerman led Okaw Valley baseball over Arcola, 20-8. He went 3-for-4 with a double, scoring three times and driving in seven runs in one game. Hagerman threw a 1-hit win over Villa Grove with nine strikeouts. He threw 13 Ks on Monday to beat Tri-County.

Joe Jeffers led the Okaw Valley baseball team against Mt. Pulaski, 17-6. He went 3-for-5, with a home run, scoring three times, and driving in four runs.

Hayden Cole was just 1-for-2 against South Central. However, Cole blasted a home run and hit a sac fly, driving in six 6 runs in obe game. Cole was 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, a run, and had 2 RBIs against ALAH. Cole was 1-for-2, being hit, scoring a run and driving in a run against BCCH.
