About 40 different Shelby Area athletes have qualified for the IESA Class AA State Track Meet on Friday and Saturday.
Shelbyville Moulton qualified 12 different individuals in 15 individual events, plus two relays. Pana qualified 17 different athletes in 21 individual events, plus four relays. Sullivan qualified eight individuals in 9 individual events, plus two relays.
Shelby’s Ryan Skowronski, who went to state last year as a 7th grader is headed back in two events. Skowronski is ranked 4th in the 1600 run going into state and 8th in the 800. Brett Kennell, a 7th grade thrower, qualified in both the shot put (41st) and the discus (51st). Ailey Mitchell, a distance runner, qualified in both the 7th girls 800 (62nd) and 1600 (47th).
After Skowronski, the highest seeds at state for Shelbyville belong to a pair of 8th grade lady high jumpers. Reigning 7AA state champ Shayla Darnell is seeded 5th this year and teammate Courtney Lee, who placed 10th in the state last year, is seeded 6th.
Tylr Gottfriedt is seeded 12th in the 8AA boys high jump. Brett Spears is seeded 14th in the 8AA pole valut. Turner Pullen is seeded 15th in the 8AA 110 hurdles. Those 8th grade boys also are fielding two relays at state, the 17th ranked 8AA boys 4x4. They are ranked 26th in the 4x2.
The area’s highest seed going into state is from Pana. Grayson Beyers is the #1 seed in the 8AA girls 100 meter dash. Teammate Hollie Johnson is ranked 4th in the 8AA girls 400. Cody Klein is ranked 12th in the 7AA 110 hurdles and is 14th in the 7AA high jump. Madolyn Hackler qualified in two events, the 8AA girls shot put (30th) and discus (19th).
Sullivan also has a few high seeds headed to state. Luke Bowman is seeded 2nd in the 8AA high jump and is also qualified in the long jump (46th). Natalie Drury is ranked 5th in te 7AA girls high jump. Logan Pedigro is tanked 6th in the 8th boys pole vault.
