Luke McConnell and the Shelbyville Ram defense shut down the St. Anthony Bulldogs on Saturday at the Vandalia 1A Regional Baseball Championship Game, 3-0.
McConnell went the distance, seven innings, allowing just three hits and one walk, while striking out four. That means the Ram defense came up with 17 put outs and committed no errors, exorcising a demon that had bedeviled them this season.
Shelby was also held in check offensively by St. Anthony’s hurler, Gardewine, that is, after the 1st inning. The Rams got all they needed in the shutout in the 1st inning, scoring twice. They added an insurance run in the 5th, but it wasn’t needed.
Sheldon Meyer, who went 1-for-3, drove in two of the three Ram runs, while Garrett Brachbill, who hit 2-for-3, drove in the other run. Meyer and Brachbill had three of the five Ram hits. Shelby also were the recipients of just one walk and two St. Anthony errors. But, it was enough. Jansen had a double for St. Anthony, but with only two other hits and limited base-runners, it wasn’t enough.
Shelbyville (18-11) will play Thursday at the Greenville Sectional against Carmi-White County, who won the McLeansboro Regional, beating Mt. Carmel, 7-2.
