Windsor/Stew-Stras baseball ran their record to 28-9 and advanced all the way to the Elite 8, before losing in the super-sectional championship game for the second time in two years. W/SS lost to Bluford Webber on Monday night, 8-6.
Webber took a 1-run lead in the bottom of the 1st and extended to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd.
W/SS then exploded for four runs in the 3rd and took the lead, 4-2. Webber answered with a pair of runs in the 3rd to knot the score, 4-4.
The Devils reclaimed the lead in the 5th, 5-4. Webber answered again with a 3-run rally to take an 7-5 lead. They made it 8-4 in the 6th.
Windsor/Stew-Stras was down by three in the top of the 7th, but could only get a single run as their season ended.
Ace Christian Vonderheide, a current Daily Union Athlete of the Week, threw some Thursday night and registered the win, then a complete game win on Saturday. Mark Jones took the hill for the Devils in the super-sectional.
He went two and a third innings and left with the score tied in the 3rd. Alex Allen came on in relief. He went three and a third innings as W/SS fell behind by four. Dylan Ohnesorge got the final out of the 6th.
W.SS was out-hit 15 to 7. They committed three errors and Webber none. Webber recorded eight strikeouts against W.Ss and Webber struck out just four times. Webber had 19 men reach base and W.SS just 10. Despite all that, Windsor/Stew-Stras almost pulled off an upset, losing by just two runs.
Five Devils hit safely and two had multiple hits. Christian Vonderheide was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Nic Hutchinson was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Alex Allen, Brandon Helmuth and Devon Deremiah all had one hit. Helmuth had the other Devil double.
