Shelbyville baseball, under Coach Sam Mehl, after graduating a all-star senior class (2013) were still able to come back this season and post an 18-12 record. The Rams also claimed the Vandalia 2A Regional Championship by beating St. Anthony, 3-0, before bowing in the sectional semifinal.
The Rams as a team hit .277, with a slugging percentage of .381, and on base percentage of .390, and .519 quality at bats. They scored 178 runs, but allowed 159.
The team had 21 home runs last year and the Rams missed that power this season. Luke Hatfield (’13) had 12 home runs last year, 11 each the two previous years. Shelby only had 11 home runs this season from the whole team.
Shelbyville also struck out a lot. The team had 222 strikeouts and only 220 hits. They did draw 127 walks and were hit by pitches 20 times, upping their on base percentage.
Senior lead-off man Spencer Shadwell led the Rams in hitting this season and earned a 1st Team All-Okaw Valley Conference selection. He hit .411, drew 22 walks, stole 10 bases and was never caught. He led the team in on base percentage (.527). He also led the team in quality at bats (.625). He led the team both with 30 singles and with 30 runs scored. He had six doubles and a triple. He had 45 total bases.
Senior ace Luke McConnell led the pitching staff, was a leading hitter and earned a 2nd Team All-OVC selection. McConnell ran up a record of 8-1 with three complete games and an ERA of just 1.49 in 47 innings pitched. He led the team with 1.32 walks or hits per inning. He had 8.19 strikeouts per seven innings.
McConnell also hit .344 with a team-high four home runs and a team-high 55 total bases. He drove in 34 runs, 16 more than the next closest team member. He led the team with both seven doubles and two triples. He led the team in slugging percentage (.591). He had .595 percent quality at bats.
