Leuchtefeld, Motion Races At Coles

---- — A big weekend of racing is set for Friday & Saturday at Coles County Dragway USA with the racers from all over the Midwest converging on the famed 8th-mile Dragway between Charleston and Mattoon competing in the Terry Luechtefeld Memorial Race along with the Motion Raceway Reunion.

Motion Raceway was a race track in Assumption, IL (1970-83) where many Eastern IL residents cut their Drag Racing teeth. Many of the old stars are coming out to race like: Jesse Nickel with the Paul Nickel’s 70 Ford Torino, Don O’Malley wheel standing Super Stock 64 Vetter, Gale Jenkins Super Charged Front Engine Dragster, Gene Shaffers Blown Altered, Mike Donnell Corn Feed E85 Nitrous Big Block Chevy 70 Camaro, Larry Bullock in his 67 Camaro and Larry Lyons in his “Penny Arcade” 64 Falcon (known at Motion as “406 pak”), just to name a few.

Currently in Super Pro Troy Salazar of Shelbyville, IL has a 1 point lead over Tommy Harlin of Mattoon while Walt Edwards of Charleston, IL is 2 points out of the lead and Bob Paul of Westfield, IL just two more points behind putting the top four racers within 4 points of each other.

In the Pro category Max Lang of Charleston in his 41 Willy’s has either had or shared the points lead this year and Jesse Brant (2012 Sportsmen Track Champion) of Mattoon, IL is just 2 points behind while Brad Talbert of Mattoon, IL and Kim Niemeyer of Humboldt, IL are tied for 4th just 3 points back.

In the Sportsmen Category Kassie Edwards-Wilson has dominated the field while on running in 5 of the 6 races winning 3 of those and leading by 14 points over Tony Lyons of Ashkum, IL with Andy Ruff of Mattoon, IL in 3rd and Scott Pickens of Marshall, IL in 4th.

On Friday, there will be the Paap Printing Friday Family Fun Night and Diesel Speed Repair Inc Diesel Drags. Gates open at 5 p.m. and time runs at 6 pm. The Friday Fun Night is designed to let anyone clock their car down the famed 1/8 mile where it’s always just $10 to race or watch.

On Saturday gates will open at 11 am and time runs start at 1 pm. Racing is the Summit Racing Series Race #7 featuring JT Muffler Quick 8, Super Pro, Pro, Sportsmen, Novice Street, Motion Top Eliminator, Motion Street Eliminator and Jr Dragsters.
