SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Athletes from all over the state of Illinois showed up to Eastern Illinois University for the IHSA Class A Boys State Track Meet preliminaries on Thursday. The Shelby Area sent a cadre of athletes on to Saturday's state finals. They qualified 11 different athletes in 9 events as 12 different entries in the finals.
Shelbyville's 4x8 relay (Myles Foor, Drennian Martin, Neil Yockey, and Corey Powers), Eli Miller in the 100 dash and Luke Hatfield in the pole vault advanced to finals.
Central A&M's Jason Pokalsey adavnced in the 200 and 400 dashes. Neoga's Corey Kersey advanced in the triple jump and long jump, while teammate Derek Williamson advanced in the 200 and 400.
Stew-Stras' Jason Fry advanced to finals in both the shot put and the discus, while Jacob Pfeiffer of Windsor advanced in the triple jump.
Shelbyville led all Shelby area schools with 14 total athletes. Senior Eli Miller finished in second place in the 100-meter dash (11.11) in the second heat, and he also finished in third place in the first flight of the 200-meter dash (22.64).
Shelbyville won the 4x800-meter relay in the second flight with Foor, Martin, senior Neil Yockey, and Powers with a time of 8:14.51, a PR by 30 seconds. It placed them 3rd headed into finals.
Senior Luke Hatfield finished the day tied for first place in his flight of the pole vault (13-00.00) with Josh Schien from Aurora and Carter Pillen from Kewanee. The rest of the flight didn't adavnce to finals.
For A&M, junior Jason Pokalsey won the second flight of the 400-meter dash (50.13). He finished second in the fourth flight of the 200-meter dash (22.54). Pokalsey qualified in both events for finals.
For Neoga, sophomore Corey Kersey got first in the triple jump (45-03.00) in the third flight, advancing to finals. Kersey also placed 9th in the long jump (20-8), advancing to finals.
Neoga senior Derek Williamson won the first flight of the 400-meter dash (50.52). Williamson also finished third in the second flight of the 200-meter dash (22.61). He advanced in both events. He finished in fourth place in the 100-meter dash (11.23) in the first flight and did not advance to finals.
Junior Luke McConnell finished in sixth place in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.92) in his heat and didn't advance to finals.
Senior Myles Foor finished in seventh place in the first flight of the 800-meter relay (2:06.42), while Junior Drennian Martin finished in seventh place in the second flight of the 800-meter relay (2:04.17). Senior Cory Powers finished at the bottom of the 1600-meter run (4:42.27) in the first flight.
Shelby finished in fifth place in the 4x100-meter relay in the third flight with a time of 45.10. Participants included senior Jake Keown, Miller, Hatfield, and sophomore Tyler Hendryx.
In the very last event of th day, Shelbyville finished in fifth place in the 4x400-meter relay (3:37.98) in the fourth and final flight of the day with Martin, Foor, Powers, and Hendryx running the event.
For Central A&M, senior Chaylin Simms finished in ninth place in the pole vault (11-06.00) which was in the same flight as Hatfield from Shelbyville. He did not advance to finals.
Neoga finished in fifth place in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 44.68. Participants included freshman Caleb Abernathy, Kersey, junior David Abernathy, and Williamson.
For Stew-Stras, junior Jason Fry finished in second place in the third flight of the shot put (48-06.00) and he also finished in fourth place in the discus throw (142-07) and Jason Becker finished in fourth place in the first flight of the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (41.33). While senior Jacob Pfeiffer from Windsor finished in fourth place (42-01.50) in the second flight of the triple jump.
For Pana, senior Dylon Hudlin finished made the opening height in the high jump (5-11.00). Hudlin also finished in fifth place in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.84) in the third flight. Senior Jason Grotts finished in seventh place (128-02) in the discus throw in the second flight.
