SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

East Central Illinois –Girls on the Run East Central Illinois and the Mattoon Area Family YMCA are partnering to kick off the fifth Girls on the Run season in Coles, Moultrie, Shelby, Effingham, Fayette, and Douglas Counties beginning the week of September 9, 2013.

Girls on the Run East Central Illinois is a non-profit after school program for 3rd-5th and 6th-8th grade girls, utilizing a curriculum developed by Girls on the Run International. Over the course of a 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach life skills such as responding to bullies, dealing with body image and the media, making healthy decisions and contributing to the community. This character-building program focuses on bolstering self-esteem, confidence and improving physical and emotional health.

Taylor McDermith, a spring 2013 Girls on the Run participant said “I love Girls on the Run because it helped me be strong with my muscles and my brain!” What a gift to be able to give the girls in our communities the tools to navigate peer pressure and social expectations, and to create strong confident girls empowered to make healthy life decisions in high school and beyond.

During the course of the program, the girls train together to complete a 5k (3.1 mile) run – the culminating event of Girls on the Run. The Girls on the Run 5k, is scheduled for November 9 and will begin at 9 a.m.. This event is open to anyone who is willing to run, walk or skip to the finish line. It is a non-competitive, celebration 5k; times are not recorded and race results will not be posted.

Girls on the Run will now have sites in the following cities: Mattoon, Charleston, Sullivan, Effingham, Arthur, Tuscola, Windsor, Vandalia, Shelbyville, Moweaqua, Arcola, Stew-Stras, Findlay and Bethany. A site is a location that has a minimum of 8 girls participating, with a maximum of 17. Registration opens on August 1, 2013, and is on first come first serve basis. The Girls on the Run program will begin the week of September 9, 2013.

Kim Harmon of Moulton Middle School said they had about 30 girls in the two age groups last spring. Registration is going slow so far this fall due to just getting back to school. However, girls can still sign up this week.

Cost for the program is $100 for 20 sessions, lessons, snacks, water, bottle, T-shirt, registration for the 5K and 5K medal. Scholarships are available by calling Beth Gillespie at the Mattoon YMCA at (217) 234-9494 or for Shelbyville girls by calling Kim Harmon at Moulton Middle School, 774-2169.
