SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelbyville football (3-6) said good-bye to the 2013 season at Tolono on Friday night, losing to the play-off bound Rockets (7-2), 25-7.
It was a game of halves. Tolono won the 1st half 25-0. Shelbyville won the 2nd half, 7-0. The first half was all Tolono offense. The 2nd half was all Ram defense, except for one Ram offensive drive to start the 3rd quarter.
Jared Finley retruned the kickoff to the 38 yard line.On the first play, Lucas Duckett threw to Devin Peterson for 16 yards and the Rams first 1st down of the game in Tolono territory. A run for a loss and then a quarterback sack put the Rams at 3rd and 18 at their own 46 yard line.
Duckett, who was just 2-of-8 in the 1st half, hit his second pass in a row a 34 yard pass to Wyatt Fox, giving the Rams their second 1st down of the game at the Tolono 14. Peterson ran for two yards.
On 2nd and 2, Duckett connected again, this time to Tristan Wade for a 12 yard touchdown. The Rams went 62 yards in seven plays and scored in 2 minutes and 36 seconds. Senior Dylan Patch, playing in his last game, kicked the extra-point, cutting the Tolono lead to three touchdowns, 25-7.
Neither team would score over the next 21 minutes of the game, as the defenses ruled the turf.
In the first half, Shelbyville didn't pick up a 1st down and Tolono put together some long drives for three of their four scores.
Shelbyville was down just 7-0, when the Ram defense stiffened and a holding penalty gave Tolono a 4th and 17 at their own 21. Devin Peterson blocked the Tolono punt and Tristan Wade recovered the ball at the Tolono 7.
Shelbyville had a chance to tie the game or go ahead. But like many times this season, the imposing nature of the goal line caused the Ram offense to wilt as they got inside the red zone.
A holding penalty and two incomplete passes, led to a field goal try from 37 yards. It was short and momentum quickly shifted.
Tolono covered 80 yards on the next seven plays with the help of a one big run play on the first play of the drive. It was 13-0 less than a minute into the 2nd.
Shelby went 3 and out falling 15 yards behind the chains. A short punt gave Tolono the ball on the Ram 30. They scored in two plays, a 27 yard screen pass and their third 3-yard TD run in a row, 19-0.
The Ram defense had spent all, but nine plays on the field in the first 15 of the game and had a ways to go before the break.
Another 3 and out put the Ram defense on the hot spot once again. Tolono had another 30 yard run and got to midfield quickly. Patch and Caleb Cloe then gave Tolono their first negative yardage play, excpet for self-inflicted penalties. Tice Robinson followed with another tackle for loss.
Finley blitzed on 3rd and 11 and Robinson defended the receiver causing an incomplete pass. Tolono had to punt again.
Shelby went 3 and out again. The defense took the field, once more.
Tolono got the ball at their own 47. A 17 yard pass and a 10 yard run, plus a face mask penalty took Tolono to the Ram 20. A great catch in the end zone against close coverage, put Tolono up, 25-0 with 2:53 left in the half.
Shelby went 3 and out again and Tolono still had 2:25 left to score again before the break. against the tired Ram defense.
Starting at their own 42, Tolono picked up a 1st down, then a 27 yard wide open pass play. to the Shelbyville 15. And 8 yard run got them to the 7 yard line with 47.7 seconds left.
They called time-out then were hit with a penalty for too many men on the field. Three incomplete passes gave them 4th and 15 at the 22. Another incomplete pass gave the Rams the ball.
The Ram defense, despite being on the field so much, held Tolono scoreless, the last 27 minutes of the game.
