Ruff and Doty Reign Again

Same song, same verse at the Shelbyville Horseshoe Club. Lloyd Ruff won the Class A weekly tourney, again, on Thursday and Patti Doty, who just started at SHC this summer, won the Class B tourney, again.

Ruff ran the table, going a perfect 7-0. In 30-point games, Ruff’s challengers never got closer than 11 points, 30-19 in game 1, when Ruff played by himself against two pitchers. Ruff and his rotating partners also won, 30-3, 30-8, 30-12, 30-1, 30-16, and 30-3.

Carroll Rhodes and Dorothy Hack had the hottest contest, battling for 2nd place. Hack was 1-0 after the first round and Rhodes 0-1. They both won round 2, then Rhodes won round 3 and Hack lost. Both won the 4th round and were both 3-1 halfway through the night.

In round 5, Hack, by herself, knocked off Rhodes and Delmar Brunk, 30-24. However, Rhodes, by himself, came right back and beat Hack and Brunk, 30-21. Both Hack and Rhodes were 4-2 coming down to the last round. They played as partners so they finished with the same record and it would come down to points in losses to determine 2nd place.

Rhodes lost 30-19 and 30-24 for 43 points in loss and 2nd place. Hack lost 30-8 and 30-21 for 29 points and 3rd place.

Rich Galvin and Lloyd Allen battled for 4th place. Both were 3-4. Galvin had 55 points in loss and Allen had 53, giving Galvin 4th by just two points.

In Class B, Patti Doty won for the 4th time in five weeks, the last four times there was a Class B competition. Doty was 16-1 the last three times she won Class B. This week, she won 3-1, thanks to spoilers Pete Rankin and Brad Phegley, who kept her from a perfect record.

Doty won round 1, 21-17. She won game 2, 21-12. Phegley and Rankin, who were 2nd and 3rd on the night, respectively, beat Doty and Shelly Weber by the slimmest of margins, 21-20.

Phegley also was 3-1, but lost out to Doty for 1st on points, three points. Doty and John Stevens beat Phegley and Weber in game 1, 21-17. Doty’s 20 points in loss gave her the title.
