Fresh-Soph 3-1 at Sangamon Valley

Shelbyville fresh-soph volleyball strutted their stuff at the Sangamon Valley fresh-soph tourney on Saturday, going 3-1.

“The girls did well at this tourney,” said Ram fresh-soph coach Ann Dunaway. “We brought all the freshman girls and they did a good job getting use to playing with girls who they don’t usually play with. Sydney Miller got to play and did a good job in the front row for us. Maddie Holland did a great job in the middle for us. Karlee Herzog did a great job in the back row, as well as in the front. She really stepped it up, which was great to see.”

Holland swung for a team-high 18 kills and also rose up for six blocks, for 24 net points. Miller swung for a 17 kills and had four blocks for 21 net points. The Ram hitters swung for 87 kills, 13 blocks, for 100 net points. They had more kills than digs.

Shelby served up 40 aces in the four matches. Caylee Wheeler served up a team-high 47 points with seven aces, while Kary Langan served up 42 points with a team-high nine aces. Wheeler and Jacque Johnston combined for 49 of the Rams’ 62 assists, Wheeler with 29 and Johnston with 20.

The mid-court defense was led by Herzog and Torre Koontz with 15 and 11 digs, respectively. The Rams had 79 digs.

Shelbyville fresh-soph (4-2) play Thursday, hosting Pana at 6 p.m.
